I was surprised to pull up newegg the day they came out and see there were none less than $110. I think the author shows a little insight by pointing out that for $220 the HD4770 outperforms the $250 HD4890..if HD4770 xfire was a full $50 less...then ATI would have really screwed themselves.

on second inspection though, there are no less than 5 HD4770s selling for $100 on newegg right now...and 3 of them are in stock and have a $10 MIR

why wouldn't you just buy a 4850? they're like the same price.

4890 for ~$200 AMIR

Actually, you can get one for $85 AMIR

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2300074&enterthread=y

I would go 4890 before two 4770s, and a 4850 at the discounted price before 1 4770.

That review does not take into account current market prices, which really discredits it off the bat.

Edit: I am referring to his conclusion that is based off of pricing, im not saying any of the 4770's actual data is incorrect.

Not really. Generally, the 4770 and the GTS250 seem to be tied in overall performance (with the 4770 having a definite advantage when it comes to power consumption). I do agree that it'd be interesting to see how GTS250 SLI compares to 4770CF, though.

Not everyone has crossfire either. Sure, every high end intel motherboard does, and almost every mid-range and above amd mobo does, but that still is a minority of the market.

Those are at stock clocks too, imagine 900 + clocks... AMD has almost killed all their high end graphics sku's...

This chip is the preview chip for the 5800 series , less the new tessellator, extra rop's ,tmu's etc...

Actually the HD4890 you linked is $215 after rebate. If you want to bring that up then as you showd you can buy a couple of HS4850s for $90 after rebate...making HD4850 xfire $35 cheaper than the HD4890.

I think most people don't take rebates into account when writing an article...because price after rebate is not what you are paying....I would say that he, like most professionals is basing his data off of the average price to be found, instead of going out and trying to find the lowest after rebate price. In fact for a published review, since rebates change so often and are often rather specious, I would say that accounting for rebates in an article that will be read for weeks, would be rather irresponsible.

THe reason 4770 in xfire is important: I was perfectly content to have a low powered HTPC a month ago. NOw i'm upgrading it to dual 4770's just because I can. U won't be sticking a single 4890 or even 4850 or gtx 250 in such a case.

4770 is now 90.00$ after rebate!

I don't really see how 4770 crossfire would be unbeatable when it has these factors going against it:

- Only is faster when CF scales, couple this with the lack of an option to create your own CF profile puts you at the mercy of the ATI driver team *shudder*
- Likely consumes more power than a single 4870/90 or gtx260
- Only 512mb vram

IMO at GTX260 or 48701gb for around $170 is a much better deal than two 4770s $100 each. $30 extra (or more if you don't have a CF capable motherboard) for marginally better performance isn't worth it.

You really need 1gig 4770 for crossfirex. It does choke a bit at 1920 4xAA in some games. Higher AA settings forget about it. I would go 4890 before I go 4770 512mb crossfirex.

I think it was xbitlabs that showed one takes about 50w at load so 2 would still be under a 4870/90.

I was looking at the results with Stalker:Clear Sky and Far Cry 2 and I notices that once AA was turned on the 4770 in Crossfire the drop off @ 1920x1200 became a lot worse.

I haven't looked at the results with the other games but I'll bet something similar is happening.

+1 4850 deal was $89. That's 4850 crossfire for $188....

I think 4770 Oc'd is faster than 4850 Oc'd . (even though Stock 4850 is anywhere from 3%-10% faster than stock 4770)

Plus the 4770s in Crossfire would probably need a lot less power than two 4850s.

Speaking of OC'd 4770 does anyone know when the ASUS TOP 4770 is going to be released? Or is that being delayed by ATI for the reason I mentioned in the post above?

Speaking of Voltage tweak I wonder what the power consumption of a max OC'd 4770 would be compared to a max Overclocked 4850?

Seems XFX is ready to launch 1gb 4770's?

Hopefully this will have a OC Friendly BIOS too to make use of that extra memory.

Apparently the ASUS TOP 4770 will do 971 Mhz on the core and doesn't need extra cooling to do this either.

That is a good deal

4770 is new so it should be about 3 or 4 more weeks till we see its normal "street" pricing which I guess would be about $80~90 (with rebates). My guess on a "Hot Deal" for them would be about $65 but I don't expect that kind of pricing for maybe two months or so (???)
