470 vs 5850

Looks like the 5850 is finally heading towards the magic $200 mark. At least magic for me, as I am cheap.

Man if anyone's in the market for a 5850, that's a damn good deal. Their website search page shows $299 but when you get to the product page it's $269. Don't hesitate if you're considering..

Wow that's a good price on one of the better non-ref designs. No voltage soft mod available, but apparently they volt these things enough to allow for decent OC:

They use good quality board components too:

I think it was apoppin' that got his 5870 PCS+ to work with software voltage control. If not, you can always add more juice by rewriting the voltage registers in the BIOS. The card shouldn't be limited in overclocking.

Well that's good news. I was going off TPU's info. I figured the registers tab would be greyed out in RBE like it is with the Vapor-X models.

I decided to get the same one from Newegg for $279 after coupon because ZZF is in Cali (VS possibly NJ or TN and 3 day shipping) and the free shipping is ground. That would take 7 days for me and it would miss my 3 day weekend coming up. If I paid an extra $10 to them I could have it shipped faster. In the end it was that I like Newegg a little better and Bing is 3% vs 2% for ZZF.
For those on the left coast or those that can wait this is definitely the better deal.

BTW coupon ends today 4/11 at newegg VGA462.

Good info, I didn't know the RBE didn't (yet) read the BIOSes. I wonder if you can flash it to a reference BIOS instead (it would depend on how different they actually are, I suppose).

Also, that's another sweet deal markrb38, great find :awe:

I'd prolly have done the same thing. I kinda cringed when I saw it was ZZF anyway. Not sure if they still suck, but I stopped using them when two orders sat in processing stage for two days. Got some BS excuse it was Paypal's fault.

I see ur a skilled Newegger and know where their warehouses are. They rock man, no doubt about it. They even run a Sunday warehouse packing shift now, not sure which warehouse it is though. Guaranteed 3 day, who cares.

Hope it works out!

Hard to justify not getting the 5850 at $269,99. Even though the 470 is slightly better, it's not $80.00 better, IMO.
