Well I read a review for [H] that showed 480 sli increasing ambient room temperature by 5 degrees in an hour.

Does anyone here run 470 gtx in sli? If yes whats your thoughts on the room temperature change when playing and how is the noise level?

Currently the 470gtx's are available for about 215$ to 225$ after rebate some with a free mafia 2 game. Very tempting to grab two of those, I don't think the new cards are going to compete with it at that price point.

If you want a quieter setup, why not get HD6850s in CF and overclock them, or HD6870 in CF? GTX470 is not a quiet card at load unless you get one with aftermarket cooling. If you are also concerned with heat dissipation, it makes even more sense to consider the AMD offerings at $200-250.

I have a 5870 already, the 68xx series makes zero sense at its current price point. Why anyone would grab a 68xx when the 5870 continues to hit low price points is beyond me.

Unfortunately 5870cf doesn't do nearly as well as nvidia's offerings in surround gaming. the CF setup tends to have many more dips and a much lower minimum fps and average fps.

I also need to use a card in my wife's new setup. Current plan is to give her my 5870.

Noise isn't a huge issue to me but I don't want the temperature in my bedroom to go from 74 to 79 degrees because I am playing a game.

Actually I take it back. There may be some merit to buying two 6870s. In crossfire at eyefinity resolutions they actually come out ahead of a 5870s.

Pros
5% more frames @ 5760x1200 than 5870
less heat
less noise

Cons
more cost 490$ for 2x6870 including a rebate compared to 440 for 2 470s or 2 5870s

I wonder what memory the 6950 is going to ship with as at 5670x1200 resolution memory plays an issue as evidenced by the 2gb 5870s

I'm hoping to give up my GTX470 SLI for a single GTX580, or possibly a GTX570 (need CUDA otherwise I'd consider a 6900) primarily for heat and noise reasons.

You need to wait for the GTX 570 to come out tomorrow, December 7th before making this decision.

The GTX 470 and 480 aren't actually all that different and a single GTX 480 is most definitely more power and heat desirable than 2 X GTX 470.

Most people purchase 2 X GTX 460 1GB when they want to compete with a GTX 480.

OP is considering SLI GTX470 or XFire 6800s for pricing, the GTX570s, while should be cooler and quieter than the 470s/480s, will likely be well out of budget.

I had GTX 470 SLI before I picked up my GTX 580, and they did heat up the room a bit during a longer gaming stint. Personally, I'd wait for the 6900s and GTX 570 to launch just so you can see if you'd rather go that route. Not that the GTX 470 SLI rig was bad (far from it), but since the launches are so soon, might as well wait.

If I go Nvidia I cannot go a single graphics card as I game in 5760x1200. If Nvidia had made it so that the 580 would run surround from a single card I would already own it.

After reading the benchmarks, I'd say that you should go ahead and grab them. I mean, if 2 GTX 1 GB 460s gets slightly better framerates compared to a 580 on most games, then imagine what 2 470s can do. And it's less expensive to boot!

In that case I would wait for the HD 6900 series. They will apparently come with 2 GBs of RAM for your high resolution needs.

This, exactly.

Only 1 to 2 more weeks before the HD6950 and HD 6970 release and Eyefinity is exactly made for resolutions like that.
