47% memory usage just sitting here

I have MSI InfoView icon which identifies my system. when u click on the icon it will tell what componets make up my system. under the memory tab it says my memory load is 47%! My system is just hooked to the enternet and this website. I use norton as well.

You can look in task manager under the processes tab to see what is using up so much memory..my bet would be on Norton. Windows XP tends to take up almost 256mb by itself sitting idle unless you do a lot of tweaking.

I have msconfig installed on this system and when I go to it I have most things turned off. However under services tab there are numerous things running and a few that are stopped. I would not even guess which ones I could turn off. most are from Microsoft and symantac and then there is some unknowns.

I just relized what u wrote that XP uses about 256mb at idle. I have 512mb. thanks. to bad I have rambus ram or else I would upgrade to 1024.

I was at a computer store the other day and a guy wanted to update his ram.. when the employee found out he had Rambus ram he said it would be more beneficial and cheaper to buy a whole new computer!!! I thought about going to rambus when it came out too bad it is so expensive... it was a good idea

I just purchased two 512MB sticks of Rambus 800 from Dell for a machine at work. It came out to about $225.00 USD.

Not cheap at all.

press CTRL+ALT+DELETE
then click on the process tab
then click on the Mem Usage Column to arrange it from high to low so you can see what is using the most memory
