4650 Pro - DXVA decode - weird full screen artifact problem

I have an old P4 HT system with an XFX AGP Radeon 4650 Pro 512MB. This problem has been going on since I got the card. I've searched far an wide for an answer but haven't found one. Perhaps someone here might have an idea of why this is happening.

Basically when I have my video settings set to use the card to decode DXVA, it does the actual job fine and the video plays good. Reducing the CPU load on Youtube, MKV's and the like. But something odd happens.

Let's say I load up a DXVA MKV video in MPC. The video will play fine, but once I close it the GUI elements of Windows turn into pure artifacts:

It's not permanent though, once an overlay change happens such as moving my mouse over the Start button, it goes away for that button since the corrupted version is replaced in the memory with the updated image. But it is annoying having to drag the task bar down and up each time to remove the corruption.

This will happen to parts of Firefox's GUI also sometimes when watching HD video on Youtube, and the video itself starts as a big corruption, but plays fine right after, sometimes with other parts of the page and screen becoming corrupted:

And if I play a DXVA video in MPC and Youtube at the same time, my computer freezes up.

I'm assuming it's a flaw in the BIOS for this XFX card. As they also were too lazy to implement Overdrive on this cards BIOS. Yet many other 4650's support it. (Had to overclock it through a BIOS flash -_-. Problem was happening before I flashed it though.)

So there probably isn't a solution other keeping GPU decoding of DXVA set to off. But I thought I'd get some input first just in case. (I'm guessing flashing my cards BIOS with one from a different manufacturer's 4650 would be a bad idea.)

Well I finally fixed the problem by BIOS flashing my XFX 4650 AGP 1GB DDR2 with Sapphire's 4650 AGP 1GB DDR2 BIOS.

Sapphire's BIOS has VER 011.022.005.000.033328 of the ATI ATOMBIOS.
Whereas my XFX has VER 011.021.000.006.031888 which it would seem does not support overdrive, nor GPU accelerated Flash/Video very well. Gigabyte's 4650 has the same ATOMBIOS ver as my XFX, and it does not support overdrive either.

So I took the risk flashing my card with a bios from a different manufacturers. Luckily it worked! GPU accelerated Flash/Video works without a hitch, and Overdrive can be used now too. Quite happy 🙂 Especially since this problem got even more annoying in Windows 7, where it would lock up the whole screen, making me need to switch back and forth between users to unlock it.
