460 GTX and CPU ?

I want to upgrade to 460 gtx but I wonder if my CPU can handle it. Intel quad core Q8300 @ 2.5Ghz. ATM I have 9800 gt and it is a bit oldschool

coming from a 9800gt, you will be okay for the most part. what are the rest of your specs in detail including resolution you want to play at?

and what is the exact gtx460 you are looking at because there are a few different models with different specs?

Welcome to the boards!

Can you overclock that quad at all? Higher clock speed would help significantly in some games.

Toyota's right on the money, make sure you don't get the GTX 460 SE, that one is neutered...

Thanks for replies. I also have 4 GB RAM but I have 3.5 in use since I am on 32 bit xp. With the new graphics card I will go on w7 to play a specific game. I play at 1920x1080 resolution and I aim for the 1 GB 460gtx. Also I do not know the meaning of overclock.

GTX460 is a decent match for that CPU, but you will be better served by a faster CPU.

Overclock means to speed up your CPU faster than it's designed to run. There's a great guide in the CPU/Overclocking section of the forums here.

timma, the problem is my CPU will not fully unlock 560 gtx, thats why I am not aiming for a better graphics card and Denithor atm I do not have any problems with CPU so no need to overclock

I run a Q6600 @3.0Ghz with 8Gb RAM and Win7x64......

I just upgraded to an ATI 6950 from an ATI 4890 (pretty close to your GTX 460)..

The increase in overall performance for the games I play (Rise of Flight, Red Orchesta 2, Witcher2, etc.) is like night and day. I can run max settings, and while I may be "CPU limited" on paper, it sure doesn't feel like it in games.
