I'm looking at the Samsung LN-S4695D (46" 1080p) set but wondering if it's too big for an apartment and if I should be going with 40" instead.

This chart says 720p (which is probably what my cable will be at) is just short of optimal at my viewing distance (~8ft). 1080p is fine.

Think it will be too artifacty at that distance?

The arm chairs on my sectional are about 4.5 ft from my 56" Samsung. I don't have a problem with it. It's still looks great from there.

Depends on the size of the room you are going to be in. I have a friend who has a 50" HDTV, a 32" HDTV, and a 32" SDTV sitting in his apartment living room. I'm thinking you'll be fine with a 46".

How big is the room? How far will you be sitting? That is more important than the fact that it will be going into an apartment. Not all apartments are the size equivalent of a bathroom stall.

Care to elaborate?

feel free to ignore that comment. overscan occurs on every TV that doesn't have 1:1 pixel mapping

what's your concern? that you'll be sitting to close to the TV for its size? for its resolution (1920x1080)?

i have a 42" 1080p TV that's 8-9 feet from my couch. it feels right. reading charts isn't really going to answer your questions. check out a friend's TV and see how the distance/size works

Why not just bring a tape measure to BestBuy and plop down in front of each TV at the closest distance you would be sitting in your apartment.

I doubt you'll think it's too pixelated. I have a 51" 1080i that I've viewed regularly from 10 feet and from 5-6 feet, and it's looked great from both distances.

Just worried about how SD is going to look at that size/distance plus if I will notice artifacts from my digital cable (Time Warner) at HD.

I went there but the problem is their feed is so horrible I was seeing artifacts 10 feet away on a 40" set. I guess I am ok with 46" inches, it just seems huge coming from a 27" SD set :)

I went from a 35" SD to my 56" HDTV. I thought the 61" would be to big but now that everything is in that room I could have pulled it off. Oh well....

57" in widescreen in a tiny ass apartment. The only real issue is the viewing angle, peoeple sitting on the far right of the room have to deal witha slightly washed out image. of course, i'm the only one who notices things like that.

It's never too big ;). Your TV screen will feel smaller after you get used to it. I bought a 42" plasma last week, and now I want something bigger already.

YES! It's a curse. 57" was amazing at first now i'm just used to it. Going bigger won't help, you'll always get used to it.. Sigh..

Well, it depends what "artifacts" you're talking about. Probably the most accurate answer is that SD and artifacts will annoy you on either TV because you're already in anal-TV-watcher mode.

The specific TV model will most likely have more effect on SD picture than the monitor size.
