450 watts enough for my system?

Mrvile

Lifer
Gonna run dual Opteron 240s and a Radeon X800XT. The hard drive is only SATA 7.2k (no SCSI or anything big like that), using Tyan Tiger K8W board. The PSU I'm thinking about is the Aerocool Aeropower II 450 watt.

Not familiar with that PSU but normally that should be enough. The X800Xt is not a big power hog like the 6800 Ultra.

You have heard wrong. TT PSU's are made by Enlight.

Dead thermaltake PSUs : 5 (out of 14)
Dead Antecs : 1 ( I use antec exclusively now, over 200 PC in operation at least half of them antec)
Dead Enermax : 1 (out of 7)
Dead generics : at least 17 not to mention rail stability problems.

That system could be run by a 350W PS, with overhead left. The deal is to get a quality one as others have mentioned. Thermaltake is just ok, nothing outstanding, but not too shabby either. I recommend Antec from personal experience. PCPower and Cooling makes some of the best out there but you'll pay for it.

You want a good quality PSU,may I suggest the Tagan 480w ,the Antec TruePower 480w goes up against it in this review, note the quality of the heatsinks on the Tagan.

You can get by with lower rating from quality PSUs ,however it works out cheaper in the long run to go for higher wattage on quality PSUs ,since you`ll probably add/upgrade your PC over the next few years, also they both have a three year warranty.

🙂

The thermaltakes are OK but you are running a dual rig so i would suggest PSU's in this order

1. PCP&C (Powerful but Noisey) OCZ Powerstream (Supposedly slightly less powerful than the PCP&C but much quieter)
2. Enermax
3. Antec
4. Seasonic, Silverstone, Zalman (etc...)

Tagan 480 is essentially OCZ 420. Those power supplies are excellent and if you want to save some $$$, Tagan is cheaper.

I didn`t know that, however Tagan are pretty big in Europe and have a reputation for very high quality PSUs at an affordable price ,I`m buying one for my next Athlon 64 rig.

🙂

Thanks for the comments guys. So I guess it's:

1. Enermax and Antec tied
2. Tagan/OCZ
3. Other quality brands (TT, Zalman, ULTRA, MGE)
4. Generic

The OCZ and the PCP&C are no doubt at the top. Tagan should be just barely behind them pretty much tied with Antec and Enermax. So basically im saying flip-flop #1 and #2 and then it is accurate.

Eh, OCZ and PCP&C psu's are kinda expensive, I only have a 60 - 70 dollar budget for a PSU, maybe an Antec SL-450?

MGE makes a 600W psu for 55 bucks 🙂 Goes to show that quality comes at a price eh 😛

i would get a 530 Fortron PSU if you are willing to spend a bit more.
it costs $75 + shipping from newegg.
should be getting one (not the first) from newegg on monday
took them long enough (ordered 4 Nov), but i got a free $25 coupon out of it.

I'll second that, one of the best PSU's you can get geradless of price.

Never heard of Fortron...

But I need (or at least should have) a 24-pin connector, I found a Tagan (made by E-Power, right?) 480W with a 24-pin and two SATAs for 78 bucks here:

Forton is a huge OEM. They supply units for Sparkle, Zalman and many other popular names. You'll also see Fortons powering workstations and servers, their known for relability and clean power.

I'm not sure who the OEM for Tagan is but I've heard its the same source as OCZ, both units have been getting nothing but high marks.

Just for the record.

1. Enermax and Antec tied
2. Tagan/OCZ
3. Other quality brands (TT, Zalman, ULTRA, MGE)
4. Generic

3. MGE is garbage consider it generic, Ultra is one step above, Thermaltake is decent at best, Zalman is among the best put them up there with PC Power & Cooling, Tagan, Seasonic, ect.

Never heard of Fortron...
lol! Fortron is a major OEM and private label manufacturer that has been in business longer than any other I know of, also sold as Sparkle Power (SPI).

Fortron Source PSUs have consistently received high marks in every PSU test @ Tom's Hardware Guide, which uses a testing methodology that accurately loads a PSU to its nominal rating and beyond. Fortron is known for under-rating its power supplies by roughly 20%.
