Back when I paid attention to this, I believe the IPSC guys were pretty much all using comp'ed .45's. To meet the rules for power, the .45 didn't need to be loaded as hot as the 9mm had to, since the .45 was a heavier bullet.

Don't know if the rules have changed to swing things away from the .45 since then (back in the mid-80's)

I would think the .45 would be used more. 9 mils in my experience are faily innacurate. But then again, it could have been my user error ;)

Depends on the competition I suppose. Last few competitons I saw used .40S&W. Always found it odd that the Ranger competition tests handgun skills using the standard M9, while the winners are awarded Gold Match 1911s in .45. Oh well, the Army is weird like that. ;)

9mm is a fair amount cheaper to shoot than .45, and also being the standard caliber for US and other NATO countries would seem to slant things in it's favor.

Really? Were you using 148gr loads in a polymer pistol or something? In my experience 9mm is a tad more accurate for most shooters after the first shot, as the recoil is less than a .45, particulary for slight shooters and women.

90gr or 115gr loads are where it's at for 9mm. I've seen friends of mine (who know how to shoot) be completely thrown off by firing a Glock for the first time; they weren't accustomed to the lighter weight of the polymer frame nor the barrel angle popular with most 'tactical tupperware.' ;)

I love 9mm and the money you can save with it, but if I had to pick one caliber I'd go with .45, albeit maybe a lighter bullet than the standard 230gr. To each his own though I guess.

I've seen both 9mm and .45 perform well enough to drop a man when asked at 70 yards.
No, I cant shoot that good. Course, we also smoked a hostage practicing the drills too but thats another story. ;)

hehe, that reminds of that one movie, can't think of it now, where they were doing the pop-up targets of criminals and innocent people and the guy smoked the innocent person because of some funny reason. if anyone knows what movie that is, let me know, its driving me nuts because i can't think of it. i'm thinking National Security.

Almost all leagues and tournaments I have seen are .45.

9mm costs a lot less to shoot though.

They got scenes like that in all kinds of movies. In Men in Black, will smith smokes a little girl surrounded my monsters because she was carrying some advanced math book or something.

In competition? .45.
But tallbill was right about the costs.

It seems to me though, that if you are going to compete, you should practice with that round and that gun.

I can hit a man sized target 10 out of 10 with both my glock 19 and xd 45 4" from 50 yards standing. Havn't and probably wont try out past that.

HOLY CRAP!
The only thing I can shoot at 70 yards is 22.

And if he's that far away he's either no danger at all or I am completely fizzucked.
