Colt military issue is one of the best, most durable and easily serviable. Make sure to get a slide conversion kit for it too.

Kimber makes some of the best custom-type .45s out there. They already have a lot of the custom features that some people have done after the fact. They are very accurate out of the box, too. Of course, you can go to a gun show and pick up a Colt for a fair price from a high-volume dealer. I've got the Combat Commander and I like it very much.

Look at a Ruger, a Llama, Detonics, EEA Witness.

You'll have 3 basic levels of firearms.
1. Junk stuff that runs $150 and is nearly worthless.

2. Midlevel units that will run from $250 - $450 and will give you good consistancy and performance. At this level the firearm will usually "out-shoot" you for several years unless you're already proficient.

3. Performance level, running $500+. Either limited production, collector's pieces, competition grade, or customized. Designed for extreme accuracy or concealability.

Get to gun shop and pick up several different brands and see how they feel and what fits your hand the best. Then combine price with what you want from the pistol (ie. target, competition, plinking, hunting, home defense, carry, or some combination).

The EEA Witness is a good mid-level start along with the Rugers. If you have the bucks, consider a Kimber or Para-Ornance. Springfields are between the Rugers and Kimber's.

There's a recent entry into the low level called a Hi-Point. Very basic and blocky along w/very cheap. Watch this one as it's kind'a picky on the ammo it likes to work with.

good luck.

Actually, I have looked a bit at the new Taurus Milleniums. They look like pretty nice guns, especially for the price: $400

Anyone know about these?

I also have a Springfield Armory stainless .45. It's a great piece,with or
without any customizing. Check out their custom stuff if you got $$$.:)

the Taurus's are good guns also and will give you many thousands of rounds; definetly not a bad choice.

was also thinking that S&W has a revolver that shoots the 45 ACP. You have to use "moon" clips to hold the cartridges in the cyclinder but that really speeds up the reloading. The current world for speed shooting is held by a person using this particular pistol.

I have a Ruger P90 .45 acp and like it quite well. The only drawback is that the grip is fairly wide and may not fit your hand well. However, it fits me like a glove. The price is decent too. I paid $300 new about 5 years ago, and now they run ~$400, which is still pretty reasonable. It'll eat anything I feed it, including cheap cast bullets that I reload.

I prefer the 40. It's a nice way to stop people without having to compromise.

However, the HK USP 45 is also a good weapon.

I've got a Colt .45 1991A1 I bought it used last year. Paid about $425 with tax, it was used but in factory new condition. I'm in the Chicagoland area (NOT in chicago near it!!) Prices are high here, so shop around and find the deal.

You can't go wrong with the .45Government model!
