I upgraded a motherboard for a friend of mine and he let me keep the old motherboard and the 433Mhz Celeron CPU. It is a Soyo SY-6IZA with a 440ZX chipset. The boards documentation says it has support for FSB up to 133Mhz. Does anybody think I should even attempt at putting a PIII 650Mhz CPU with a 100Mhz FSB?

It should work just fine, the ZX is basicaly a BX chipset.

Before tryining it I would update the bios on the board.

I downloaded the Bios updates. Do you know what the highest multiplier is safe to use with a 440zx chipset?

Thanks again...

The multiplier is not going to affect you. All Intel CPUs are multiplier locked and will operate their given frequency reguardless of the board they are in. There are a few exceptions where the board does not support the CPUs, but that is the exception rather than the rule. A bigger concern is whether the board supports the proper voltages for a given CPU.

The ZX probably does not support voltages low enough for coppermine CPU's. Is that board slot 1 or s370? If it is slot 1, get a good slotkit that has jumpers to set CPU voltage. If it is s370, your coppermine will not work since the pin-outs are different between PPGA and FC-PGA (newer FC-PGA boards can take the older PPGA celerons, but not vice-versa).

I dunno,the latest bios says
Fix when using Celeron II cpu, cpu type show Pentium III
, wasnt the Celeron II a coppermine cpu?

And if it supports a Pentium III shouldnt it work?

Wasnt a Pentium III socket 370 a coppermine?

Hey why not just try it. :)
