440BX upgrade advice needed

Currently my father has an Intel SE440BX-2 mainboard with a Slot 1 Pentium III 500 MHz and I was thinking of buying a Celeron 800-1000 MHz in a Socket 370 version and mounting it in the board with a Slocket-type converter. Since the Celeron recently made the switch from a 66 MHz to a 100 MHz bus and from the Mendocino core to the Coppermine-128 core, would this still be possible on a BX? Yes, I would like to use a Socket 370 Pentium III, but cash flow prevents that at this time. What is the maximum processor I can put it in this, Celeron wise? Any help is appreciated... :)

It depends on which BX2 your using some maxed at 600 others at 800
IE today I put a PIII 800 in that very board and the bios came up and told me it was incompatable, I have got around this though by flashing an older bios and it will let er run anyway.
Go to Intels site and it'll tell you there which rev of board will let you run what.
But I don't see a rpoblem with your idea of using the 100 mhz FSB 800 Celeron though.

There were two revisions, the SE440BX-2 and the SE440BX-2V, the latter of two introduced Coppermine support, since the previous model could not supply proper voltages (too high), therefore if you put and CuMine into the older board you'll get the incompatibility message as stated above. You'll need to check in order if the board can function with the chip, although you want to use a Sloket I'm not sure how that will function in terms of supplied voltages, anyways, here's a link to Intel's site for Processor Support with the 440BX-2

Just a word of advice, spending some money trying to upgrade for a p3-500 to a celeron 800 is not cost effective and probably not wise. The performance gain would be very little and not noticable to make it worth the cost. Only a major jump in CPU speed would make much difference, something like double the speed is what alot of people and PC hardware sites recommend.

hahaha! I was just about to make a post just like this! I have a P3B-F (asus 440BX slot1) w/ a PIII 500. I was thinking of either getting a PIII 850 or something, or just getting a new motherboard and CPU (I'm thinking iwill XP333 + Athlon1500XP). Obviously the Mobo+CPU is WAY more expensive (w/ DDR memory, around approx. $300+). whereas the PIII would probably be only around $130.

Check out the info Here. It is for an OEM SE440BX-2, but should still apply to Intel's regular board.
