HiTechCafe.com strikes again. Memory

I just bought two sticks yesterday, $39 each + $12 UPS 2d Day Priority shipping. UPS Ground $2 less.

The listing shows this as new memory with a 90 day warranty from HiTech Cafe. A CSR told me that most of this memory is Samsung -GH series memory. They also have memory from other manufacturers lumped together under a part number starting with VAR. Or, is there a memory maker who starts their PNs with VAR? Ask for Samsung and I am almost certain that they will ship what you ask for.

Anyway, -GH series memory is rated CAS2/CAS3. I don't know how overclockable registered memory is but I do know that:

1) You cannot mix registered memory and unregistered memory. You are guaranteed to get a blank screen if you do. Make your choice, one or the other.

2) Registered memory is the only way to break the 512MB barrier on a 440BX chipset motherboard. And, using 256MB DIMMs on a 4 DIMM slot board is the only way to reach 1GB of installed memory. I have two 512MB PC100 Registered ECC DIMMs that I purchased while learning this lesson the hard way.

The web page shows 138 DIMMs available as I post this.

Good Luck HotDeals

Nice find. I'm going to upgrade my server with 3 sticks. The website lists 135 as being available now. ;)

Check this Crucial.com FAQ which talks about registered DIMMS.

Short version: servers use DIMMs with so many freakin' chips on them that the memory response time has to be slowed down by one clock cycle so that the DIMM has time to get the requested memory data from amongst all them chips.

If you look at the technical specifications for the BX chipset you'll find that only later steppings are guaranteed to support 256MB DIMMs. There was a thread about this in General Hardware a few weeks ago.

I've got a Tyan board that needs registered dimms (S1837-UANG), GX chipset. Tyan says the board is picky about the quality of memory. Any idea if these are completely Samsung made, or just Samsung chips on a generic dimm board?

Just got my memory and a small packet of JellyBellies.

The facts:

This memory is from ATP Electronics, a qualified memory manufacturer for Intel, Asus, Supermicro, Tyan, Advantech, Arima, Quanta, Abit, Apple, Biostar, Gigabyte, MicroStar. ATP Electronics

The actual memory is their PN AMR32V72E8S4GHS. It is specifically compatible with ASUS P2B, P2B-F, P2B-S, P2B-L, P2B-DS. My SuperMicro P6DBU seems to like it too.

A quick comparision with their memory that is specifically compatible with the Tyan S1837DLUAN-G, S1837DLUAN-L Thunderbolt series of motherboards shows a few major differences.

ASUS P2B, P2B-F, P2B-S, P2B-L, P2B-DS AMR32V72E8S4GHS 256MB(Chips: 16x8)

Tyan S1837DLUAN-G, S1837DLUAN-L AMC32V64E8S4GL 256MB(Chips: 16x8)

The C in AMC means the Thunderbolt prefers unregistered memory. The 64 in place of the 72 means it prefers non-ecc memory. And, the GHS and GL refer to the type of memory components used, the Thunderbolt prefers CAS3 memory.

I hope this is not too late too help.

The Crucial/Micron memory selector says ATP is being a little harsh on the Tyan Thunderbolt and that they will sell you the equivalent of this ATP memory for $114.29. Using registered memory now means that, when you get the opportunity to add 512MB registered ECC DIMMs that are required to fully utilize the Thunderbolts maximum 2GB capacity, you can upgrade in 256MB steps. One 512MB module at a time.

Oh, and the memory special is still running at HiTechCafe.com but there are only 92 modules left.

BadSweetums, it really helps that you were able to id the memory as being ATP Electronics, who is Tyan certified. The Tyan board (A S1837DLUAN-G GX chipset)is my dev workstation, so I need stable memory.

I already have 2 x Corsair 256MB PC100 CAS-3 Registered ECC (32Mx72), so I do need for the new memory to be Reg ECC also. Sound like the ATC will fit the bill - although the web site for hitechcafe.com now shows the price as $41. I'll check it out.

Still pretty warm if your mobo uses PC100. Doesn't matter how low PC133 goes if you can't use it.

HiTechCafe prices fluctuate wildly. Their "normal" prices are
generally crap. But just about everything goes on sale with
some (unpredictable) regularlity...$299 regular price and
$40 sale price is typcal.
