Hi all, after a lot of reading I have taken the plunge and just rebuilt my system with an amd 4400+ and a geforce 7800 gt I opted for these rather than more expensive components as im hoping to overclock both( something i have never attempted before and very nervous about).

My first questions are what temps should these be allowed to get to without worry of damaging them?

At stock i hanve noted that the processor temp is approx 35C when idle, 45 after running 3d mark 05 and creeped up to 50 after playing half life lost coast for 10 mins.

Is this normal as i thought 50 was getting a little high.

Thanks in advance for any help

If you bought your system so you could overclock it, it would have been better (and cheaper) to pick an Opteron... ;) BTW you really shouldn't be nervous about overclocking, there are a lot of people doing it around here, so if you have even the slightest question, loads of peeps will help you, no doubt... :)

The maximum core temperature for these processors seems to lie around 65 - 70°C (following AMD's specs), so you're still safe... However, buying a better HSF would be a possible outcome, but how is the airflow of your case? Maybe that one's not sufficient...

50°C celsius is kinda about the max your processor should be under load, but it's no disaster if it hits this barrier... Try Prime95 (run it on both cores) to stress your processor even more... If temps are about 55°C or higher, then you'll have to find a solution... Seeing that this is on stock speeds and stock voltages, it's not very encouraging, however, your idle temp is very good...

HSF-wise, my recommendation is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, which provides high-end cooling at a mid-range price... Plenty of reviews around the web to prove this...

AMD's data sheet says 65c is the max safe operating temp, I think for the whole X2 line. My 4400+ idles at 32-36c depending on ambient temp, and loads to 46-50c.

Ok thanks for your help people. Whilst i was monitoring my temp i noticed that the fan speed was a little low. Is there a simple way from me to increase the speed as im presuming that will help cool the cpu

Thanls again

You're talking about the CPU heatsink fan? Depends entirely on the motherboard and BIOS. The BIOS may actively control the fan based on chip temperatures, or it may run at a constant speed. A program like Speedfan might be able to control the fan speed, but it needs to have a config file for the specific bus ports on your motherboard. If there alreay is one you can try it, if not you would have to code up your own.
