44 gigabytes of space vanished!!!

Let's preface this by saying I am not sure exactly how long this has been going on but when I got my ipod, I noticed that I only had 77.1gb of space used up on my 120gb hard drive(15 were used for preformatting). I checked all the folders on my C drive and they totaled up to 33 gb.

So somewhere in there theres about 44 gigabytes missing!

Also, I am not sure if this was installed before this happened, but I found a trojan courtesy of a program by dvdvideosoft I downloaded of cnet. (Removed with AVG av)

Anyone have any idea what could be happening?

Thanks for any help

well, not knowing means you may have partitioned and formatted the drive wrong.
Why don't you just suggest he sprinkle magic dust over the computer, see if that fixes the problem. Just as useful.

More to the point, remember there are some hidden directories, the recycle bin and system restore that you normally don't see in explorer. Turn off system restore and empty the recycle bin. Check the disc space.

If still a large discrepancy, run chkdsk against the drive, sometimes there are problems with the filesystem and chkdsk corrects it, recovering free space for use again.

Otherwise there is likely a directory that you do not have permission to access that contains the missing ~44gb in files. I haven't really played around with this scenario much to advise how to check this out. What I would personally do is clone the drive then instruct Windows to give me permission to all files / folders / and subdirectories, then go hunting for the 44gb. The cloning process is done because afterwards I'd want to return the permissions back to their original states. This would be a more advanced procedure, perhaps someone else can come in with a better suggestion to search for files / folders you do not have permission to access.

On a system that I recently repaired there were several "unknown" users that had a large repository of zip files that were obviously movies, porn and games. They had been using Limewire and they were now a robot zombie file farm. (say that 4 times quickly)

When you said you checked all folders in C

Did you unhide hidden folders and system protected folders?
you can unhide BOTH in View->Folder options

If you don't, hidden folders are not checked.
Did you disable hibernation?
Check %appdata% size
check system restore status and Windows shadow copy disk usage
