2,401 minutes

Excess minutes of 410 were charged at $0.40 per minute = $164.00

Fortunately it's my sisters cell phone bill, not mine.

Upgraded her T-Mobile plan to
$59.99 1,000 anytime weekday PEAK minutes
$2.99 UNLIMITED weekday OFFPEAK (evening) minutes
$10.00 UNLIMITED text messaging and T-Mobile to T-Mobile minutes
=========================================================
$72.98 per month plus taxes/fees/charges

How the heck can she send and receive 121 text messages in 1 month?

I find sending text messages too tedious.

I had one (coincidentally on the exact same T-Mobile plan!) a couple months ago that was almost $700 because I used so many minutes over...

stupid cell phones and their minutes.

If you know you're gonna go over your minutes that month, you usually can call and change plans right away. I've done that with Verizon in the past, and they just prorate everything.

T-mobile requires that you finish out your current billing cycle, there is no proration, at least there wasn't when i changed my plan a few weeks back.

Holy crap. That's a freaking work week worth of airtime. She doesn't need a better plan, she needs to give up the phone.

It really doesn't suck that bad.

She uses her cell phone a lot (mostly for work) and makes enough to afford the cell phone bill.

I barely use 500 minutes a month and she uses that much in 1 week!

You've never met my mother. As soon as she got a keypad for her Ericsson, she went nuts with the text messaging.

I cannot imagine doing mass text messaging. The only exception would be with the sidekick or nokia 6800

If your sister uses the phone for work then her work should pay for it. Unless she's self employed or something.

I don't think I would pay more than $40 a month for a cell phone. I currently don't have one.

Edit: LOL Brutuskend....

I am always surprised at how much people talk on the phone, especially men. I mean that's borderline feminine if you ask me. Yes I realize in this case it was your sister. Either way, how can anyone possibly talk on the phone that much? I actually dislike talking on the phone and get annoyed if conversations become "personal". I use the phone for business (not necessarily work, but for meeting times, information, etc), not pleasure.

I'd probably cancel my phone for being so irresponsible if I did that. If it's her business, well, I'd have had a better plan to start with... at least i hope I would.

Good thing about upgrading it.

Do they have a phone yet that you can tell it to shut off or some other restriction at the monthly limit peak...

I know you can get track minutes but are there any that track by month/billing period and let the user set/control it from the phone level w/o constantly checking it? I doubt it, the cell co's wouldn't like that much.

Yep if I didn't upgrade the plan, she'd continue to get $300-$400 monthly cell phone bills, now it should be down to $80-$200 per month which is still a lot but less.

I've also wondered if there's a cell phone/plan which shuts off when you have reached your limit.

121? You're joking, right? I'm up to 997 so far this month...I had my Ericsson T68 from Jan '02-Nov '02 and it logged 23,000 sent and received messages. The problem is, you guys don't know how to type on your phone. I can type almost as fast on there as I can on a keyboard, probably faster than the average person types on a keyboard. And those little keyboards, like on the Sidekick? No way, I type much faster on the phone pad.

I just don't understand the whole appeal of text messaging.

It seems very tedious typing out messages, even if they are brief and in short hand via a cell phone.

I'd rather chat online via AIM/MSN but that's not as portable as a cell phone.
