In laymans terms what is the difference or benifit between these two intel pin sizes

478 is the newer better one
smaller and no new motherboards will be made with the 423 anymore
all future P4 cpus (for now) will be 478
don't build a system with a 423 socket/cpu because that will limit your upgrade path to 2ghz

Benefit is that there are now more pins for power which allows them to continue raising the speed of the processors (higher MHz requires more power).
Other than that, the P4 architecture remains relatively unchanged.

Definitely go with the new socket 478 as they have a longer life ahead of them and there are far more 478 motherboards to choose from compared to socket 423 motherboards.

Socket 423 is now effectively obsolete. There is no reason to choose Socket 423 over 478.
