broken laptop drive isnt broken anymore... opened the cover and it turns out the head was somehow jammed on the platter.. freed it and away it went, all data still 100% intact & scandisk revealed not a single error.

anyone else ever experienced this??

As you've probably discovered, deals on laptop drives are INCREDIBLY rare. Here is my suggestion for finding a good price:

1. Go to newegg.com, go to the labtop drive category, sort by price, and choose the $/gig:size ratio that is most appealing. This is your starting price.

2. Go to our other favorite deal site which I can't mention w/o getting a vacation, and look for coupon threads to major hardware sites. See if you can beat the price in (1) by using coupons on other sites.

About 2 months ago I was in need of a laptop drive for similar reasons, and I settled on a 60 gig Toshiba drive for $125 shipped from newegg.com. I did a *LOT* of looking and couldn't do much better, and I highly doubt prices could have come down much in 2 months between the facts we haven't had any real advances in this area and laptops are EXPLODING in popularity.

Sort of. The common way to fix this problem (stuck head) is to freeze it. Opening up your hard drive can have consequences in the future. Dust is big enough to cause mechanical problems at this level.

You got lucky. It sounds like you (or the user) dropped or severely jarred the laptop. HD heads don't "beach" themselves w/o a little help. ;)

Good luck. :)

A word of advice to you, unless you can afford to lose all you data on it I would back it up pronto.

Your fix will probably be very temporary.

are you sure the platter was holding it? 2.5 laptops have a head lock so when they are off,and in transport in their laptop, the heads are locked into place to prevent damage. it could have gotten stuck in this lock? i believe 3.5 drives have this also, but not to that degree.

haha yeah it was me.. i guess i did a job on it, how do the HD heads stick and hold if the gap in the head is slightly bigger than the platter?

yeah, the lock was disengaged when i opened it up, plus i knew it wasnt the lock doing it because you could hear it rattling around. (is that a characteristic of laptop HDs too?)

yes, they all rattle, reguardless of it they are locked or not. if the hard drive is properly shut down, and removed, the lock will still rattle inside.

edit: if your interested i have a 20gig hitatchi 2.5 drive not being used :)
