4200+ with 7600GT...or 4600+ with 7600GS?!?!

Hey,
I'm getting a new computer...and the topic title is pretty much my final decision.

So basically I'm wondering whether the difference between the 4200+ 2.2ghz and 4600+ 2.4ghz (both 1MB cache) is as appreciable as that between the two nVidia GFX cards. The prices between the two systems only differ by $20AUD so that's not really an issue.

Thanks for any help, the decision is irritating me quite a bit :p

if you're a gamer, the gpu should matter more to you. Only in multimedia and editing apps will you see the speed cpu difference. Go with the 4200+ and 7600gt.

Thanks for the help everyone. Although, I'm more of a console gamer than a PC gamer (I'll probably only get a handful of games for PC, namely Battlefield 2).
And I do use Photoshop fairly often, which makes the choice a whole lot tougher once again. Argh...I'll figure it out :)

4200+ and 7600GT. Just o/c the 4200+ some I am sure it will do 4600+ speeds on stock voltage. Zero risk of killing the CPU. If it does die it's defective.

Where did I say that he can RMA it if it does die? I don't recall telling him to RMA it if it does. I wasn't implying it when I said it's defective if it does die.

But even if you don't o/c still go with the 4200+ combo because it's unlikely you will see any difference with the 4600+.

If he isn't gonna game much buying a X1900XT would be a waste. Besides I don't think it would be in his budget.

Amd 64 3000 + 7900GT > X2 4200 + 7600GT

1)As of now that cpu won't be giving as much advantage as the card.
2)In the near future, once you oc your cpu you will be having alright bandwidth to play your games, although a dual cpu could od you good, the lack of eough graphic power won't be able to compensate.

Get amd 64 3500 + 1800XT

Yeah but he said he didn't game much on the PC so why bother buying that powerful of a card if it's not gonna see alot of use? If I did very little gaming on a PC I would rather have dual core than a more powerful video card.

I have a eVga 7600GT CO with stock 580 Core, and 1500mhz Memory (nVidia specs @ 560/1400). I can constantly run the core to 605 Mhz or so and the memory at 1600 Mhz. (The core and memory CAN go higher. Really no reason for me too though.) Its very hard to beat the bang for the buck for this card. You can get it for around $150.

I plan on getting another when the prices drop more and run them in SLI. I have the 7600GT with a 3800+ X2 @ 2600mhz and they both do good for the games I play at 1280x1024 res and fairly high quality settings.

personally, as long as he gets some socket 939/AM2 athlon 64...i think he would be fine. its not like he NEEDS dual core, but it would be nice to have.

No I think he's trying to tell you he woudn't commit fraud if he fried something from overclocking it.
