A morbidly obese father has been diagnosed as too fat to work by doctors who fear his weight may cause him to fall over and crush his colleagues.

Barry Fowers, 51, who weighs a life-threatening 30 stone, worked until October last year assembling industrial power source equipment.

But insurance analysts decided he was too big a risk to himself and to others and Mr Fowers reluctantly accepted voluntary redundancy.

Mr Fowers - who had a heart attack when he was 30 and has been warned another would kill him - is furious that he is still classified as fit to work despite his poor state of health...

'Some days, his IBS can be so severe he can’t make it upstairs and I have to stand my husband in the shower and wash him down.'

She added: 'I can’t afford to keep him. I may as well pack my husband’s bags and chuck him on the street.'

Mr Fowers is currently seeking work, but has had no response from the job applications he has filled in.

He said: 'Some of the applications asked "Have you got medical conditions?" and I’ve filled it in that I’ve got a heart condition and diabetes, and that does go against me.

'It does get you down. I have tried dieting, exercising and lifestyle changes.

'I have been offered the possibility of having a gastric band or bypass fitted but I’m a bit dubious about surgery. With my heart condition I think if I went under the knife I might not wake up.

I was about that weight and never felt like I was at risk for crushing a coworker :\ but fuck... when you're so overweight that your wife has to hose you down instead of taking a shower, have the fucking surgery.

I'd rather be dead.

It sucks that they won't let him work where he was anymore. He's probably just going to sit on the couch all day now. At least he had something to do before.

Reminds me of the time when this obese lady lost balance in a packed bus and tried to grab my arm. We both fell and she glared at me like I was a weakling. Now I offer my seat to overly huge people because I wouldn't want anyone else to be injured. :(

Sounds like you almost had to call Amber Lamps.

Sure you have...

I dont understand statements like that either. I waited too long to start dieting, but once I did and committed to it at my *worst* times I still lost half a pound to a pound a week, and I wasn't that overweight. The heavier you are, the quicker you start to lose weight and the simple fact is that on any average diet is weight simply is NOT sustainable. I'm sure he could lose 50 pounds very quickly if he simply limited himself to 3000 calories a day.

I'm no nutritionist, but 3000 seems a bit high to me. Shouldn't it be closer to 2000-2500?

That's obviously preferable, but at 420lbs. his weight already isn't sustainable. If he just drops his intake to what it's supposed to be then he'd probably develop ketosis amongst many other things. It could possibly kill him. He would do good enlisting the help of a dietician.

As for surgery, he's gonna need it either way. The skin (especially female's) do very well when it comes to tightening back up. But there's only so much it can do and he's waaay beyond what can comfortably reform. So he might as well do the bypass.

no joke :|

but I guess if he just has a heart attack and dies, he won't have to worry about the risks of surgery.

my understanding is that after a certain point, new skin is grown -- not just stretched -- and once grown, it's there till it's surgically removed.

Not even close. 2500 is around maintenance for the average person. 2000-2500 wouldn't unsustainable for someone at his weight, and even if he suffered no ill health effects because of it, I can most certainly say he'd give up out of frustration.

A proper diet doesn't have to be drastic. It's something you work towards over time. Start by consuming fewer calories than you do on an average day (by about 500, for someone his size) and slowly work your way down as you get more comfortable with it.

Get that fat fuck on outside

Fixed that for you. Walking outside is refreshing and distracting. You can wander around and look at new things without getting bored. Walking/running on a treadmill can be boring unless you have some kind of entertainment. I usually find if I run on a treadmill I'm constantly checking my distance, which can distract me from good running form and discourages me if I didn't go as far as I thought.

How do you know he hasn't?

I played baseball and soccer for a decade when I was a kid. I was a very active, healthy-eating fat kid and nothing I could do would changed that so I gave up trying. I lost a fair bit of weight during high school and I have no idea how; I didn't change anything about my lifestyle. Even lettered in sports. Gained some back a couple years post-graduation, am still active, and still a fatty.

To this day, I can either eat what I want or eat healthy and my weight doesn't change. I can pound boxes of mac'n'cheese and don't gain a pound or eat salad and veggies and protein and all that and don't lose a pound.

You judgmental types are ridiculous.

It's more about portion control then what you eat. The point of eating healthy is that you can generally consume more without consuming as many calories/carbs.

I don't really see how it's possible to clean up your diet and not lose weight. It's a simple, scientific formula which really leaves no room for interpretation.

I eat once a day, sometimes zero times a day.

However, feel free to continue to judge.

when you get winded walking from your front door to your car and feel like everyone you pass on the street is judging you for being a fatass... not so much ;)

Uh, that won't help you lose weight. Starving yourself is one of the worst possible ways to lose weight long term (though there are exceptions given certain methods of dieting).

It's best to eat small healthy meals consistently throughout the day (and if you're dedicated, waking up in the middle of the night to eat something light is also good).

And I never judged you.

Did I say that was a method I'm using to lose weight? It's not. I'm well aware of all that crap. The first thing skinnies do is judge fatties for eating so much. How do you know fatties eat so much? Obviously some of them eat next to nothing. Congrats, you just generalized and judged fatties.
