I heard you really only see the difference going from 720p to 1080p if you have something bigger than a 37". Curious would a 42" with only 720p still look good or should one look for a 1080p on anything bigger than a 37"?

There's an audio/video forum here you know :)

You can still get by with 720p on a 42", unless you plan on sitting pretty close to the screen. 42" is indeed the screen size though where you definitely want to consider 1080p though.

How far are you sitting from the screen?

Not enough to justify any siginificant price premium. If it's $50 sure. If it's $300 more...upgrade something else in your system that would provide you more enjoyment.

I have no complaints about the image quality of my 720p 42" plasma.

yeah it really depends on viewing distance. my 42" 720 plasma is gorgeous at about 10 feet.

I will be roughly 5-6ft from the screen. Is that to close or should I get something smaller?

It's right in line with the "TXH Certified Distance", but that's way too close for me. I'm about 7.5' from my 42" and that is comfortable. Anything closer and I'd start feeling nauseous.

I picked up a 42" 720p Sharp Aquos today for $866 at Sam's Club. No regrets here.

Sam's does have a nice 37" inch 1080p JVC for $998. If you are sitting 5 ft away that would be a good set.

I once saw a 2048p 3" display. I assure you the 37" 'theory' is bullshit. It's about the viewing angle not the size.

42 inches is never too big unless you're sitting 4 feet from the screen.

the year is almost 2008. 1080p is the only way.

Let him keep preaching it. That way it drives down the prices of 720p sets so that us bottom dwellers can pick them up for cheap.

Uhh, absolutely true. Stop the misinformation, read this.

The biggest misinformation out there is "well you won't notice the difference." 1080p IS BENEFICIAL FOR ALL SOURCES. Stop buying outdated inferior technology.

4ft doesn't sound too close at all.
I'd love to have a 100" projection screen and be maybe 8-10" from it, at most. the more of my vision the display takes up, the more immersed you are by the image. :p
and that still is no where near to coming close to being in one of the front rows at a movie theater where they have a large screen.

You are aware that it's not actually 2008 yet, right?

Anyway, I've been looking around for a good HD projector recently and just about ever knowledgeable person I've spoken to tells me that you can't really tell a difference between 720p and 1080p until you reach about 100" screen size. So... obviously ymmv.

Keep in mind that while hd-dvd and blue ray are output at 1080p they're about the only things that are. Most OTA channels, cable, sat, and xbox-ps3 games output at 720p.

Personally I'll probably go with 720p for now and upgrade in a year or to when 1080 is more widely used. *shrugs*

GAAAA! Stop the misinformation. Read the dang link and what 1080p display does for ALL OF YOUR SOURCES.

*head explodes*

Most OTA channels, cable, broadcast are 1080. STOP THE DAMN MISINFORMATION.

Based on the chart, if OP is 5-6 feet away, he will need a diagonal size of 46" at "full benefit of 1080p"
