I'm looking for a 42" display to use as a monitor to replace my current 24".

They have the Toshiba p42lsa at my work.. It is an excellent display but is selling for around $3500US.

I've heard decent reviews on the Westinghouse LVM-42w2 which is selling for around $1800.

Noted that this is ebay, but they are both 42" displays, the Toshiba is 1080i and the Westinghouse is 1080p (which I assume is better).

Both models do 1920x1080, and both have 8ms response time.

Is there a reason that one costs twice as much as the other one?

I cannot see justifying $1600 just for a brand name, but I have seen the Toshiba in action whereas I've only read reviews on the Westinghouse model.

Any help is appreciated.

Don't know the difference, but I got a killer price on the Lvm-42w2 two months back and am loving it!

You should be able to find the Westinghouse for under $2K _new_ from Best Buy, with firmware update installed and a full warranty. They've had it as low as $1500 but the price bounces up and down from week to week.

It's a great deal, if you can live with the limitations mentioned at AVSForum.com.

I'd probably have gotten the closeout 2005 model Samsung 56" 1080p DLP for $1800 that was in Hot Deals last week instead though.

Edit: in the US of course. Everything costs more in the Great White North, eh :)

You can read reviews over on avsforum.com but Westinghouse it bargain brand whereas the Toshiba plasma is pretty pricey. Probably because it's 1920x1080 whereas most 42" plasmas are 1024x768. For a computer monitor I'd definitely save the money and get the Westy.

westinghouse is a sub brand of GE which although a "name brand" isn't that high on the want to have it list.
