I could really use some advice.

I'm having problems with my system. It's been freezing up for the past couple of days since installing a new cable modem (usb). It will start windows and then in 30 sec. or so just hard lock. The only way to get it started again is to reset. Went into bios to check settings and it has locked there a couple of times?? I have the modem unhooked and it still does it, I can't figure what could be causing the problem. It has stopped a couple of times while booting in the bios also.

I'm using a 300 watt supply in the Atnec case.. I had the ram set to auto and changed it to cas2 133mhz. Still freezes in windows, happening everytime I try to access both CD Rom's, one on primary and one on secondary.

I check the connection on both thee supply and ram.

Anybody else got any ideas?

According to Sandra CPU temp is around 36'. That might not be exact but it's not overclocked so I don't think.. thats the problem.

I've got the bios set to opitmal except for serial 2, and on chip modem which are disabled. (and the ram settings). So I don't think if got anything screwed up there.

Try booting with only one CD-ROM connected & Harddrive see if that improves the stability. Also try resetting Bios to default levels. Btw have you tried booting into safe mode is that stable?

Tried each cdrom same thing.

Tried in safe mode, seemed to work OK, checked settings in DM, checked Sandra temp etc.

This sounds like a driver problem or motherboard setting problem ,try removing the driver for cable modem in safe mode.Btw did you enable USB in motherboard bios?

The modems usb, would I remove drivers for usb? I have the modem unpluged and don't see it in DM. I'm not following..how would that effect the cdrom's.

Edit: Hooked up both cdrom's again, put cd's in both (one of just files on CDR the other CDRW) so neither were autorunning and I can open both and view content, It seems that it's locking up only when there are trying to autorun?

I'm running a stability test now so I'll see if it will freeze.

Any ideas, I'm not a tech so I can really use the help. Thanks

It's still going into a hard lockup, hardware conflict, but what is it. I guess the next thing to do is format and reinstall?? I really don't want to go through that again if I don't have to.🙁

I forgot your cable modem was USB anyway if you installed the driver remove it,btw it`s worth checking to see if you have the latest driver,I was thinking about checking the jumpers on the CD-ROM but being you have tried it disconnected that rules it out & also rules out in theory PSU problems since they are not connected the PSU would have more power,
so there may be a software conflict somewhere since Safe mode is stable btw minimum drivers are loaded for safe mode so I`m thinking driver problem.

🙂

When you first installed the USB Modem, were you asked to install software needed for the modem to work?? If so, just check in Add/Remove Programs for any software/drivers. Then check in System Properties under modems for your model...
Good Luck!

Thanks again for all the info. That's one of the reasons I like this fourm, good people..good ideas🙂

I'll update when I try your ideas.

Removed the modem driver and network software and the system is running stable so far. But it still hard locks when I try to put in the one disk with the insall file? Tried another disk that has an autoplay file and it worked? Tried it on my other machine and it ran fine?

Whats going on?
