Not good news, just not as bad as it could have been. This incident and the downing of another Blackhawk Helicopter todays will really embolden the insurgents. It seems like this is the real war, one that is fought with guerilla tactics. Obviously Bush and his Neocon handlers totally screwed the Pooch when they declared major hostilities in Iraq were over.

it seems to me that the Saddam loyalists are getting more and more organized

I don't think that this battle will be over in the next 12 months

I see no news of a downed Blackhawk. Care to cite something to bolster that assertion, or are you simply making inflammatory statements that distort the facts?

Major hostilities are over, unless you're seeing large manuever forces engaging enemy troops concentrations somewhere in the news. You want to abuse semantics -- it works both ways.

U.S. Copter Downed in Iraq; No Injuries

We are seeing more casulties in the Guerilla War now than we did when we were engaged in "Major Hostilities". It seems to me that Rummy and his Neocon Brethren fscked up by dismissing Gen Shinski's estimate that it would take many more troops than we now have in Iraq now to properly execute the occupation of that sh!thole.

I am surprised that the Iraqi army even had the balls at one time to give "formal battle" to a much superiorly equipped enemy..... I was expecting something like this to be the real war.....

Iraq is hardly a sh!thole. I can think of a half a dozen places that are truly sh!tholes. Such as Liberia, DPRK, DRC, Somalia, etc.

IMO anyplace where Americans and Westerners are being attacked and killed is a sh!thole!

New York City, Istanbul, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Mombasa, Riyadh, all sh!tholes in your eyes? How much foriegn travel have you done? By that logic half the world would be off limits to us.

Red - I know you feel pretty shafted re: the premise for going to Iraq, but did you really think it would all be wrapped up by now?

Nope but I also didn't expect the Administration to do it on the cheap at the expense of our soldiers lives.

It wasn't a Blackhawk -- it was a Kiowa. It wasn't shot down in terms of completely crashed -- it made a hard, controlled landing with NO INJURIES to either crew member. Big difference from "another Blackhawk downed".

If more troops were needed, we would be seeing larger and larger groups of insurgents attacking without significant fear of retribution. Instead, we're still seeing the same tactics against isolated convoys or outposts. There's even suicide bombings -- hardly the hallmark of a confident, well-equipped or dominating foe. If anyone said the pacification phase would be easy, they were stupid, but the fact is that the country is progressing. Oil output is up; electricity production is up; water production is up; commerce is increasing; the Iraqi police and military are forming and operating effectively; in short, the nation of Iraq is taking shape while the remnants of the old are being whittled away and destroyed. No one has a magic wand to wave at the insurgents to make them go away, but every indication is that we'll win this sooner rather than later, with the help of the Iraqi people. There's sacrifice involved, undoubtedly, but President Bush never said it would be a cakewalk, despite what others may have wanted to believe.

I never said they were dominating. Hell they weren't even dominating when we invaded Iraq to start with. However, the attacks have scaled up dramatically with more success. Frankly I would take the word of Gen Shinski over the words of the Chickenhawk Neocons that are waging their "Excellent Adventure" on the cheap all at the expense of our soldiers.

In Vietnam wee were never dominated by the enemy yet we lost. The reason we did was because our Politicians didn't listen to the Generals.
