And who said 24x is all ya need, and the sifference to 40 is barely noticable ? I just did one at 40x and one at 24x......i could soooo tell the difference, even without the timer.... :)

Now i need some nice cdr though :p

That's insane!:D

Fast CD-Rs are nice and all, but I wish there was a way to automate it. I edit video and when I'm done I archive my source clips. It often takes 10 or more CDs. I hate burning then changing, burning, then changing. I'm surprised that some CD-autoloader hasn't made it's way into the consumer market.

Yup, Verbatim are what ill probably go for...the drive seems to love Mitsubishi Chemicals cds above all others :)

I stopped at a local shop on the way home to pick up a new modem (I think I finally found the source of my connectivity problems), & they were just receiving their 40X Plexwriter shipment. Looks like a nice drive, too bad they don't have 'em in black.

Viper GTS <-- Just bought a 24X Plextor in black

Given that I hardly ever burn CDR's (and only then to make audio CD's), I care more about CD-RW speeds (for backups). I have a 12/10/32 drive and I'm in no rush to get anything faster. It's not like I'm in a mission critical profession that would require that I burn a CD in 3 mins instead of 7 minutes. And it's not like I'm waiting on them to burn, I do it in the background. So I could care less b/c it's going in my computer case besind my computer.

So to me, all of these faster CDR writing speeds are worthless to me. Just a waste of money like faster DVD drives.

I love Plextor. Still have my $700+ burner running perfectly... an External Plextor 412 CDR (SCSI). 4X Burn Speed. I guess I'll change my burner when I have more data to deal with such as burning multi copies of CDs for "backup".

Hence, if you pity me DONATE to me for a new burner :). I take Paypal.

Silly me didnt record the exact times, i will next time (hehe :p) but it was about 3min 20 at 40x and almost exactly 4min at 24x....

Hehe, dont say that to the 75cds worth of stuff i got lined up on HD to be burned NSF4, they might hear you :p

As for the rewrite...i use them a fair bit too, im gonna love the step up from 4x to 12x....12x being about a minute faster than the 10x is just a bonus :)

robg1701, how much was 40x plextor? My 24x Lite-on was $59 and usually burns a full cd in under 4 minutes. So if the Plextor costs anything over $100 I would say it ain't worth it.

Then again you get the braggin' rights!

FYI: There are NO CD-R/RW medias that SUPPORT 40X writing. So even if you are burning at 40X, in REALITY it is not.

Where the heck are you going to find the media? Also, is the greater price of the media worth the extra 40 seconds? I think not! (This is probably because I have a 24X drive :). I want to state my bias)

It was £157, but dont go comparing that directly to $ using the exchange rate, when it comes to hardware it rearely if ever that simple with us - just look at the XBOX...3weeks til we get to pay £299 for it - thats like $450...ah well, i aint getting one anyway:)

For comparison, the 24x Lite On is about £80, the 32x Lite on about £115, and the 24x Plex about £115.....if i was concerned about the price i wouldnt have pre-ordered it a couple weeks ago and wouldnt have bought a Plextor...the last one served me well, and will again in the near future, so im quite happy to carry on the tradition.

jacko...they may not say 40x on them (the Plextor ones...i darent use the 24x cds ive got now at 40x, they wouldnt cut it....some nice Verbatim on the otherhand probably would..theres 32x Mitsubishi Chemicals cds out there that Plextor are recommending for 40x at any rate). And if its not reaching (i reliase its not ' true 40x '...) 40x, how is it pulling the 30-40sec advantage out its ass ? ;)

40seconds is a long time when you got nearly 75cds to burn.....and thats just what ive got here on HD, theres more than that waiting to be copied from CD....so yeah, its worth it.... :p

Haha, Ive seen people looking for 8x CD-Rs so they can use them in their burner!!

I personally own the TDK VeloCD 24x10x40 (Paid a little over $100USD for it) and man, it is great. I didn't know a whole lot about the Liteons at the time, but man, this is a great drive. Benches faster than the 24x10x40 Plextor in a few diff reviews I read:)

I heard that going from 24 - 32x write speed saves 20 seconds. I am not in that big of a rush :)

I can still remember the 2x CD-R Mitsumi days :) No RW! :p

I know i CAN, i just wont....theyre cheapy cds, 24x to 40x is quite a gap and its been shown it much rpeferes better quality discs...dont get me wrong, i will e trying it tomorrow for kicks, ive been working tonight, but its not somit ill actively be doing with them....

As a sidenote...the drive can and will reduce the speed (without telling you) if it is aware the media iscategorically unable to handle the selected speed....i havent encountered this personally yet though.
