40x CD-R won't read burned CD's

I've got a system with a new Afreey 40x IDE CD-R in it. It reads regular CD's and audio CD's okay. The problem is with burned CD's. If I click on the CD in Windows Explorer it can open it and show me the contents. If I click on an execution file to start the program I get an error message that there's no CD-ROM in the drive. What's up with that?

CPU: K6-2/500
Mobo: FIC 503+
RAM: 64MB PC-100
OS: WinME

Edit: Just thought of some other info that may be helpful: I'm using Adaptec's Easy CD Creator 4.0 to burn direct, CD to CD at 4x. I'm closing the CD after the session.

One of two things.

Possibly you are using cheap cd's? If so, use higher quality cds.

Two:
Your cd rom can not read cdr's, and unfortunatly, I do not believe there is anything you can do about this.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the insights. I don't think the quality of the CD's is an issue. I'm over half way through a 50-spindle and the ones I've burned have been read on other CDR's. It certainly could be the CDR itself. I realize Afreey isn't a high end brand. Time to check their site and see what's up.

From Afreey's site. Check it out:

<< My Afreey CD/DVD-Rom drive cannot read CD-RW discs, but my CD-RW drive can. What is wrong? >>

<< If you are using Adaptec's DirectCD or other software writing in UDF 1.5 format, you will need to install the UDF Reader. Please go to http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/udfreaders.html for instruction. >>
