40Gb or 60Gb?

Looking at the IBM 60GXP but can't decide between the 40Gb or 60Gb. I presume performance is exactly the same even though the 60Gb has more area to cover? Do you think the 60Gb will run hotter. I am just trying to jusify spending the extra £43 for 20Gb extra - whether I would use it.

The area is the same.
The 60GB just have more platter which will make it hotter than the 40GB.

I would get as much space that you can afford.

Actually.... Performance with the 60 GB should be slightly better than the 40 GB. Basically they cram more data in the same space, so when the head makes 1 rotation it will read more data on the 60GB than on the 40 GB.

Just to let you know, I've heard of people having problems with their 60.0GB 60GXP ide drives. (failing drives, etc) --> http://www.storagereview.com, people mentioned that this problem was due to the 60.0GB drives being more complex(more platters) and poor manufacturing for SOME of these 60.0gb's, thus failing and yielding other problems. However, the 40.0GB 60gxp's seem to be the "problem free" for the majority of users (%95). In that regard, I'd recommend you get the IBM 40.0GB 60GXP drive. Hope this helps.

You're wrong. The platters are identical - 20GB per platter. The 40GB has two platters, and the 60GB has 3. Performance will be the same - very good.

i decided to go with the 40gb cuz i figure by the time i fill that up, newer cheaper hds will be available.

if you have a burner its hard to imagine filling up 40g...

Go for the 60 if ou got the cash. I wnet wiht the 40 becuase I needed an HD then and didnt have the cash to ge thte 60

I never seem to be able to keep track of cds so the bigger the hard drive the better!

But the problem about the 60gb scares me, so i think the 40gb is the better option and as mentioned already the price/GB ratio is better
