Saw this at Techb@gains... Buy has the 40GB Fireball AS ATA/100 hard drive 7200 RPM for $179.95 - $30 coupon (for new and returning) = $149.95 - $40 rebate = $109.95 shipped

Rebate

On the bottom of the rebate it states:

Offer valid on Quantum Fireball Plus AS 10GB, 20GB, 30GB, 35GB, 40GB products purchased from one of Quantum's Authorized Marketers located in the US, except where prohibited, taxed or restricted by law. Requests must be postmarked by 1/31/01. No reproductions accepted. Offer limited to 5 units per capacity. Request from groups, post office boxes or organizations will not be honored. Fraudulent submission could result in prosecution or other legal action.

Would anyone take that to mean possible 200.00 in rebates per capacity, or am I reading it wrong?

Does anyone know if this would run ok in a TIVO? I know it is overkill but everytime I run over to Compusa and Best Buy they are sold out of their 99.00 dollar specials.

For TiVo, try Western Digital 45GB or Maxtor 40GB in that price range. I would avoid 7200rpm drives for possible heat and noise problem. Quantum rebate is one of the worst I have encountered. 4 months for one check, and lost another rebate request.

Re:

It's hard to tell 100% from the rebate sheet but it doesn't list 60 gig anywhere for the 40 dollar rebate... It just lists 10/20/30/35/40...

virtuamike Where did you see 35 for the 40 gig?

I think for the money, the deal in this range is still the IBM 45GB GXP.

It's whipser-quiet, reliable, and you can get a great price without rebates.

Onvia has it for 149.99, PM to buy.com and then apply a 30 off 150 coupon (adding something tiny) brings it to 119.99 w/free shipping.

I've gotten a couple of these recently, and am pretty happy with em (hoping they'll perform well in a RAID array with the ABIT board everyones been telling me about).

Here's the rebate info

I agree, the deal to get is still the IBM. Storage Review did not have a favorable opinion about this drive. Can you pricematch buy.com and then apply a coupon? I know you can do one or the other, never seen both though.

This is still a great price. It's just that the IBM is so much better, can actually justify paying the difference. Definately can't knock 40GB for $109.95, just that us CA guys get stuck with paying tax.

Just ordered this drive a week ago, one thing that i did not know from buy.com site is that this drive is pretty much oem, It came in a plain brown box, no 100 ata cable or drive rail adapters (I'm used to retail kits) or even a warrenty card or spec sheet or quick install instructions. Some of you don't care care about these things, so shouldn't be a problem, and the rebate doesn't seem to want a upc (there is none)
But to the people who don't have spare 100 ata cable or drive rail adapters, you gotta figure them into the total cost (~$10?)

Haven't tried the drive out yet, its second on the list after I trouble shoot my new plextor12x10x32( its creates a static hissing sound on burnt audio CD's.... weird, I thought optical cds should all be the same quality)
