401k: Who is your investment company?

WTF!

We get a paycheck stuffer yesterday saying that effective July 1, we will be changing 401k trustee and recordkeeper from Fidelity (401k.com) to Mercer HR Services of Boston.

Who the hell is Mercer HR Services of Boston? I like Fidelity. They have a cool website and it's easy to track and change things. This new company probably has like .0001% less operating fees, so our HR jumped on it. I don't care about that crap, I want a reliable company handling my future, not some HR reseller from Boston.

although they did F*ck up my last paycheck and deducted an extra $350 of AFTER TAX earnings on top of my specified % of PRE TAX earnings, when all my deductions are pre tax.

So basically im out 350 dollars this week whcih is crucial because my student loan payment is do....wednessday next week. wtf.

PayChex, with a really weak selection of funds. But I figure the tax savings and employer match are worth it, and eventually I can roll over to Schwab or Vanguard for some VFINX goodness.

In all likelihood, your plan administrator (employer) selects the funds....not the recordkeeper.

Mrs has fidelity. My last company went from enterprise funds to some pissant little outfit in new york that was managing something pathetic like $80 million and only 16,000 people. Current company not sure, as I've not qualified yet but will soon.

No, we're a small company without enough employees to use a good service like Fidelity for a reasonable total admin cost. PayChex's in-house 401k is weak but cheap.

put half your money into their S&P 500 index fund and leave it there (no shifting around).

There will be temporary dips (like last month) but over time it's as close to a sure bet as you're going to get with a stock-based fund.

my last company used mercer for our pension, and scudder for the 401k before they sold us to another company. my new company uses vanguard. good luck, I am still waiting for my pension lump sum payment from mercer human resource consulting.
