400MHZ completly AGP8X compatible Radeon9700 from *gasp* *TYAN*! Edit:Clarification. Capable of 400MHZ.

Whoah, and I thought those guys were the conservative ones?!! :Q😎

The link, verified by firingsquad.

Now.. how long has it been, since we've seen an original non-refrence design? And who woulda thought it would have been from Tyan?!

These guys are definatley the biggest innovators since canopus!

Edit: The designers, Tyan said, have tweaked the board layout and the card will work with all AGP 8X chipsets, again, unlike the "other guy's".

That's proof that it's not the refrence design. They're guaranteeing compatibility with all AGP8X chipsets. That isn't possible using the refrence design.

Edit:It's not 400MHZ. The driver allows 400MHZ. Clarified by HARDOCP.
Sorrry people, no show here. But if you want a card guaranteed to work with AGP8X, this one should be it.

i saw it last night, but i didn't get around to posting it 😉 went to sleep instead 😛

Yeah, way to go Tyan... from good mobos to good graphics cards. Nice to see somebody still puts some thought to the design, other than just selling the reference designs...

This is the reference design with a larger heatsink/spreader and a blue pcb instead of red. Wouldn't exactly call that innovative the way Canopus was.

Compare these 2 pictures:

Here are some better pics front and back:

Tweakup

The component layout looks identical to me. The added software and diagnostics Tyan has sounds nice though and additional speed without quality loss is always a nice bonus.

I think the Inquirer got this one wrong, according to the spec sheet on Tyan's site, the core is 325MHz. It may be possible to hit 400MHz with some boards, but it's certainly not a guarantee as the board is not being sold as a 400MHz board.

adul sleeping:Q whats at coming to😉

Um, did anyone else notice that the card is clocked 325/310 just like ANY OTHER BOARD??? I don't see where the excitement comes from (check the Danish review).

They include a special driver that will allow for the core to be clocked at 400mhz. You did read it right? 😀

If I had the money this would be the Radeon I would buy. But I am still plenty happy with my Radeon 8500 with the 3.3ns ram.

How can A SOFTWARE DRIVER influence HARDWARE CAPABILITIES of a video card? The Danish people couldn't get it over 350MHz with PowerStrip!

Wohoo, paying extra for an ATi equivelant of CoolBits.

They said its $350 retail. And you know newegg will probably sell cheaper. Cheapest radeon 9700 pro on newegg is the sapphire one for $322 for retail. I wouldnt be suprised if u see the tyan for $325 at newegg in few weeks

I would guess that they are using the huge heatsink along with some voltage modifications to allow 400Mhz core speed. The biggest limiting factor for overclocking Radeons (with the 9700 and thinking back to the 8500) was the lack of voltage being sent to up the speed. You could add a better HS/fan to the core, but without voltage modding, you couldnt touch the chip's potential.

Im just waiting to see if you can use ATI's drivers or if you are stuck with Tyan drivers.

? ATI® RADEON? 9700 PRO 256-bit VPU, 325MHz engine
? Up to 256MB ultra high-speed DDR memory; 620MHz DDR
? 128-bit floating-point precision color
? Optimized for DirectX® 9 and OpenGL? 1.3
? 6X Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing
? HYDRAVISION? multi-display;
dual independent 400MHz 10-bit DACs
? AGP 8x/4x compatible
This is directly from the Tyan website. Someone please tell me if I'm misinterpreting it. The core (engine) still runs at 325MHz. As you can see, the only things running at 400MHz are the DACs (digital-analog converters) used for running multiple monitors, not the core. Did I miss something on the site saying the core runs at 400?

Hey.. I think i've found something.

It says that Tyan will be releasing the G9700Pro on their website. Does that mean that all Tachyon cards with the G prefix will have the 400MHZ clockspeed?

The specs I posted above, from the Tyan website, are for the G9700 Pro. The full names of the cards are "Tachyon G9000 Pro" and "Tachyon G9700 Pro".

Just check out Tyan's website.
