The source at the time was the local TV station in San Diego. The number was astonding. They were herding bunches of them into busses for the trip back. This link has some official numbers

The link does get to the 8,000, but not the number that amazed me. This was 1982 and I can't find any archievals on it in any of the San Diego newspapers..
