I saw over at Notebook Review that Walmart has a $400 laptop. It's not the greatest computer, but it'll do the job for any casual Internet/Office user and it comes with Windows XP MCE.

Specs are quoted from Walmart's web site.

# Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3300+
# 2.00GHz processor speed
# Up to 1600MHz system bus running at AC/DC Mode 25 watt
# 128KB L2 Cache
# 512MB 333MHz DDR System Memory
# Max supported 2048MB
# 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
# 60GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive
# ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP with 128MB DDR (shared)
# Integrated 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN (RJ45 connector)
# 54g 802.11b/g WLAN with 125HSM / SpeedBooster support
# High Speed 56K modem
# 101-key compatible keyboard
# Touch Pad with On/Off button and dedicated vertical and horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad
# 15.4" WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800) Display

If someone in the US can buy one, please report back if it comes with 1x512MB RAM or 2x256MB. I also wonder if this is eligible for the free Vista upgrade? I may need to drive down to Washington state to buy one as an x-mas gift for this!

that's actually not bad for the price. 512MB ram and a 5400 RPM HD are what is surprising. usually they stick you with 256MB and a 4200RPM HD which really hampers performance.

It won't be eligible for the upgrade coupon unless the OEM includes it. Not sure if you get Vista upgrade coupons through retail stores like BBY, but I'd bet on the fact that you won't get it from Wal-Mart.

Exactly what I was thinking.

FWIW my Wal-Mart v5305wm had a single 512MB DDR module, WD 60GB 5400RPM Scorpio HDD, broadcom 802.11g wifi, but did not include a Vista upgrade voucher.
