The DG31PR won't post with the E7200 (45mn), until it has a BIOS upgrade. You need a 65nm processor in order to access the BIOS and update it. That's the catch-22 with those boards and 45nm CPUs.

So yes, it'll work, but OOB, no.

Also, I wouldn't waste the 2 slots on 2 x 1GB RAM sticks. It's more than worth it to get either a single 2GB DDR2 800 stick (about the same price or cheaper, anyway), and leave the other slot open, or just bite the bullet for 4GB of RAM. Otherwise, with an upgrade you'll be pulling RAM.

I bet that In Win case is going to be noisy and hot (only 1 80 mm fan). If you can find it on sale, Antec NSK2480 will probably be a lot quieter and have much better case ventilation. Plus you have got to make sure that the stock Intel cooler (again, probably noisy) is going to fit in that case.

WD3200AAKS might be quieter than that Seagate (this one has one 320 GB platter, so it should be both quiet and really fast).

This OCZ Memory is supposed to be quite reliable and compatible, if you don't mind dealing with rebates.

I just noticed the case- the video card won't fit in it, nor will full height PCI or PCIe cards.

The case is low-profile- it requires add on cards to be low-profile. Either change the case, or find a low-profile ready video card for it. (Often times they are sold with the full-sized bracket attached, and a set of low profile brackets for the card, and VGA output.)

Stock Intel CPU coolers are low-profile ready.

I have the NSK2400 and NSK2480 (same case, different PSUs); they're pretty dang nice for the money. Comes with a quiet PSU, two large 120mm fans, and a great minimalistic front end. I really like them, although they are plastic and the fronts fascias have fallen off both of them (nothing a little hot glue couldn't fix!).

If you don't need the rig right away, e5200 might be released soon. It is supposed to be targeted at sub - $100 market.

WD6400AAKS isn't much more than WD3200AAKS, and has two of those 320 GB platters. If you don't need a lot of space, the Hitachi drive Kaido originally linked is probably also very nice (Hitachis I've owned have always felt very speedy, though they have tended to be moderately more noisy than Western Digitals, but their noise profile has still tended to be benign and easy to ignore).

I see no reason the burner wouldn't work. Apple's pretend 'superdrive' is a Pioneer, I believe.

What do you all think the chances are the intel mobo will come with a newer bios?
Slim to nil. I just got one of these boards a week ago- same older BIOS.

At this point, do you actually need a MicroATX board?

Since you've moved up to an ATX case, you could use the GA-P35-DS3L board that Kaido linked to in the first post. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but you get worthwhile extras like 8GB DDR2 1066 RAM support, faster FSB, more slots, more USB ports, and OOB Wolfdale support.

Just wanted to update my build list:

Case: Thermaltake M9
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
GPU: EVGA 9800 GX2
RAM: OCZ 8GB
Network Card: ENCORE ENLGA-1320 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps
Heatsink: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7
PSU: Corsair 750TX
Keyboard/Mouse: Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000
Flash Drive: Super Talent 4GB Flash Drive
SATA-IDE Adapter: Syba SD-SATA-IDE $11.99
HDD Expansion: iCage
Rosewill RAID Card
640GB Western Digital
Western Digital 1TB drive

I haven't ordered the hdd stuff yet, but plan to as soon as I see my hackintosh up and running. I am also talking to a guy locally about purchasing a western digital 150GB Raptor for $100 with warranty, so I am probably going to jump on that. Haha as you can see this project quickly jumped up from my original limit of $500.

Well got the rest of my stuff in today except for the 8GBs of RAM and 9800 GX2. I have already ran into a few problems, so I am going to use this post to post tips and for other users.

If you are booting Kalyway off of a cd and get the following error: /com.apple.Boot.plist not found

If you are using both an IDE HDD and IDE Optical Drive on the same cable make sure that the jumpers on both are set to the correct settings and not Cable Select. I put the DVD drive as Master and HDD as slave and it then booted up fine.

Ok problem I just noticed, I have had my audio setup like this for years. I run my xbox 360 audio into the Line in on my computer using a (I don't know the real terms so just work with me) converter that takes the red and white cord and turns it into like a headphone cord that then gets plugged into my line in. Then my line out has a Y adapter and leads to my computer speakers and then my stereo. So I can use my stereo for both the Xbox and computer. Under system preferences>Sound>Input then I click on Line In and then I turn the Xbox on it shows audio is coming on through the input level, yet no audio comes out of my speakers. The computer audio comes out fine though. Any ideas?

Leglez- try this:

Open Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup

Audio devices tab- Select properties for: Line Input.

In the volume box, check THRU. Hopefully you should then hear sound from Line in passed through to your speakers.

Hmm it won't let me, Thru is greyed out. I can check mute though.

Oh and also does anyone know if Security Update 2008-005 is ok to install? I have installed everyt update but that because I have been weary of the sounds of it.

That worked perfect, thanks Zaap! One question though, it looks like it has to be on to work. Is there any way I kind make it start on startup, but not appear?

Try System Prefs/Accounts/Login Items. Click the + and add LineIn as a login item, check the box beside it to Hide.

What is the most bad-ass video card supported by hackintosh currently? I am just curious incase I want to use my Hackintosh as a windows box to play games on in the future.
