$400? Canon A80?

Well, we have to buy it from staples because we'd have a $100 gift card to use on it, and we don't want to spend more than $300 after gift card.
 
i got an A80 for that price but off of ebay with a tripod, case, rechargeble batteries, memory card, and a bunch of other stuff.
 
I just ordered an A80 and a case yesterday from Dell for ~$330 after tax w/free shipping. You could probably sell the Staples gc to someone and make out in the long run. 🙂

The A series have superior macro to the S series. That's important to me, YMMV.

I really like my S400.. never owned an A80 but I can tell you the S400 is a damned fine camera. I paid 270.00 shipped for mine slightly used off the forum. I think they average about 320 shipped on Ebay. You could buy for around your target price and use the gift card for accessories, memory, extra batteries, etc.
 
That's a waste of $100.00 worth of gift card, because their camers are marked up $100.00 too much from the start!

I read that you can't get lenses for the S400 but can for the A80. I plan to use this to practice taking lots of photos on and such, so I'd like the one with more quality.

What are some other differences?

What are some other cameras I can either get at $400 at a staples or around $300 or less anyplace else?
 
Seriously don't waste your gift card like that. You can go online and get any camera for about the same price as you would using the gift card at a B&M Staples. Use the gift card for a hard drive or something. None of the S Series is threaded for conversion lenses AFAIK so if you're into that get the A80. It's a nice camera, my parents got the A70 and they like it a lot.
 
Take your $300.00 and buy their $400.00 camera online for the $300.00 price it should be. That will leave you the $100.00 gift card to spend on other stuff... maybe a coupon/rebate/sale priced Staples hot deal of some kind.
 
Ok, based on online prices I have a choice from these cameras: SD10, S400, and the A80, all around $300 +/- 20.

Which one would be the best choice?

I'm not really sure what the SD10 other than possibly a newer version of the S400. I think the A80 seems to be the camera for best quality and options when taking a picture. If I get the A80, will it still allow me to take point and shoot pictures that turn out good when I'm on vacation without having to set options for that scene/setting?
 
I have the Canon A60, little brother to the A80. The great thing is all the shooting modes. For instance, the portrait mode is awesome for taking still shots with my baby. I even bought a 2.4x telescoping lens that will fit the A80 also, so I am thinking about selling my A60 and upgrading so I can print larger pics. Great line of cameras for the money!
 
I just got an A80 a few days ago and couldn't be happier with it. I chose it over the S series because it had more shooting options and also the swivel LCD screen and fits the hand better. The swivel LCD is awesome - I don't think I'd ever buy a camera without one, you can do tons of stuff with it. Unless you need something really small, I would go with the A80.

Yes. The auto fuction is very easy and the photos are good. This is both a point and shoot camera and a manual one.

I have a a70 and love it, btw I did have a S series cam and it always felt to small in my hands and was not good for one handed pics. Just my 2cents.
 
After comparing all the specs I do like the fact that the A80 has Aperture and Shutter priority. For serious photographers that can be a nice plus. Plus the swiveling LCD. I like the single proprietary battery of the S400 though and they can be found for a few dollars on Ebay for spares and the S400 comes with its own battery charger. You have a tough choice but maybe if you like the feel of a larger camera and the other features the A80 would be better for you.
 
I got my wife the A80 for Christmas and she absolutely loves it! She takes it with her everywhere. I was looking at the S400 or the A80 and in the end I went with the A80. It has more options, swivel LCD and it just feels better in the hand. AWESOME camera!
