400,000 Play Station 3 for North America

A friend of mine owns a console video game store here on Maui, and I was talking to him today, and he was telling me that Sony is only making 400,000 playstation 3 for North America.

Is there any truth to this?

He seems to think anyone that can jump on a large order of these can sell them off later, and make some money because of this shortage.

Who are the big distributors for this, is there a way I can place an order for 100-200 of these?

1. Yes those numbers are what seem to be accurate from what information is available

2. There is no way you are ever going to get your hands on 100-200 ps3..... good luck getting one.
 
This tends to happen every holiday season.
No matter how many years out in advance they plan their systems, they can never get enough out in time for Xmas shopping.

Seems like they have been doing it since the NES days.
 
So there are no distributors out there still selling to companies, meaning there are no distributors you can approach to purchase these from for a business?

I'm sure right now...being a few days away from launch that all the PS3s have been spoken for by individual retailers.

lol, you have $100,000 to invest in PS3s?

No, you're not going to be able to make a large purchase of PS3s. Look at it this way, Sony has a shortage due to bad yields, etc. Now, who's going to get the consoles? Best Buy, Amazon, and Wal-Mart who have sold massive amounts of Sony products in the past, or some "distributor" who hasn't sold squat for Sony? Sony is going to reward stores that have sold a lot of Sony stuff, period. There is no reason why they would sell 100 consoles to a distributor that could have gone to Best Buy or Wal-Mart.

The only way you're going to come across a large shipment of PS3s, is if you manage to hijack whatever truck they are being shipped on.
 
doesn't your friend have contacts in the industry / distribution chain?

I'm assuming he doesn't just by a bunch of games at GameStop and resell them in his store.
 
I think the original goal for sony was 400.000 units, but they cut them down to something like 340.000 units a month ago
 
retail companies that sell to normal customers have had preorders filled for a long time. anyone else with supply would do the ebay thing themselves. why would they let you have the profit.
 
How does the pre order thing work? If someone put down a deposit, are they guaranteed to get a unit? Thus not having to camp out?

Yes except MOST (not all) camped out for their presale too

Amazon is not doing.....

Walmart has this page, but I doubt they are taking preorders (also, it a $1.4K bundle). It does say shipped by 17th, however.

Cosctco will not b doin preorders.

Target will not be doing preorders.....

No one is doing preorders🙁


Looks like there will be less than 400K at launch.

Typically the only places that do preorders are the EB games type places.
