You start off sleeping a lot after birth, then gradually start sleeping less up until age 40, then go back up to sleeping a lot after 40 gradually.

So it's like a "V" Or "U" curve on a chart

Explains a lot.

When I was in my 20s, I worked as much as I could...50-60-70 hour weeks were the norm. (I wouldn't even consider a job that was less than 5x10) That went on until I was in my mid-30s when I was working an 5x8 hour job for the local electrical utility. (with rare overtime) .I slept 7-8 hours per day. By the time I was 45, I was back to working 5x10, 6x10, even 7x12 hour jobs...I rarely got more than 4-6 hours of sleep...Nowadays, (I'm on the + side of 70) I still rarely sleep more than 5-6 hours...with an occasional 30-60 minute nap after breakfast.

I did a bunch of night shift without a lot of sleep in between the other week. At the end of them I came home, ate and enormous pizza, drank half a bottle of wine and vaped a couple of bowls of good pot, then slept for 26 hour solid!

When I was in college I hardly slept, didn't have time. Homework, studying etc until 2am, then get up at 7 to catch the city bus to get to college. Rinse and repeat. Now I work a shift work job so get lot of time off and do tend to sleep a lot, sometimes too much... I sleep at my best during night shift or on days off. Day shifts are tough, I have a hard time falling asleep early and the mornings hit like a truck. I hate early mornings.

I was around 37 or 38 when I got diverticulitis and lost the ability to sleep more than about 3 or 4 hours before getting pain in my abdomen.
I used to not sleep enough because of work and being busy. Now its stupid medical crap.

That said, colon surgery on 1/13 removed cancer and diverticulitis. Soon im gonna get to do chemotherapy, so, maybe i'll be tired enough i can actually sleep good for once.

I'm in my mid-late 40s and I'm actually sleeping better than I have in years. Because I barely stay awake past 9:30 p.m. I might get 8 hours some days, but usually more than 7. I don't know if I slept more than 5 hours when I was younger. I had to hustle more and wanted to party. I am not fondly reminiscing, either. Nothing beats sleep.

I've always been a champion sleeper. I've gone through periods where I stayed up later than I should, but can't sustain it. I can nap anywhere. When my daughter was little. We'd go to festivals, and I'd enforce naps, cause naps are good. I'd just lay on the ground with her on top of me, and I'd be out like a light.
