40" Samsung or 24" monitor

Right now, I run a 40" Samsung LCD TV as a monitor. The resolution I run is 1920x1080.

I was just wondering if it would be better to just pick up a 24" monitor. Something like the Acer 24.

Some of my games I play now, like Prey....It absolutely will not run at my stated resolution. A few other games wont either. The rig is in my sig is the system that will be used. *Eventually upgrade to a HD 4870*

So what is better, LCD Samsung or a LCD monitor ?
 
it depends what you like

if you like to be up close then you would like a 24" monitor. If you like to kick back on the couch, the 40" is for you.

even 24" is big for me. But your 2900xt that is coming shortly *will* run Prey at 19x12 🙂
- you may not get to run every last detail with Max AA; but it will look beautiful on either screen
[or alien-ugly in all its glory; it depends how you look at Prey 😛]
 
Thats the thing though....I tried running this screen at 1920x1200 and it says...frequency out of range. As it does with other resolutions as well. Thats if I set the resolution at desktop.

If I change the resolution in game, it always defaults to 800x600. Then I have to reset all my game settings. Several of my games does this.

Even though the option is there for 1920x1200, I cannot use it.

And actually to tell you the truth, The highest resolution for Prey I can run is......1280x1024. And I have no idea why. Because the other options are there. They just wont stick.
 
what video card are you using now? You are using your 1080 40" monitor and cannot use 19x12 ?

Usually "out of range" is a monitor limitation, not the GPUs 😛

And yea. I cannot use 19x12.

GPU is a BFG 7900GTX OC. I know it won't run a lot of game at 19x12, but I do have some games that it should run good. And at the very least, I should be able to run 19x12 on desktop, but I get the frequency out of range message.
 
Well I'm not expert but aren't most HDTVs limited to 1080p (1920x1080) resolution? I don't think this TV is any different. If you want to go higher then you have to go with a dedicated LCD panel. As for games running on 1080p, some may not have the option in-game but you can probably set it in the config file.
 
Well for money there are ways to recoup cost but I agree, why get rid of a perfectly good TV if it is most probably some other limitation. Are you connecting to the TV using DVI/HDMI or VGA? Some TVs limit VGA to lower res.
 
Prey should work fine at 1080p, it's even a supported resolution HardwareOC Prey Benchmark. If it's not in the menu, then check for a config file and add it there ( unreal 2004 need this ). I couldn't see myself going back to a smaller screen, besides I love having a true 16/9 widescreen for gaming.
 
this poll really shouldn't make the decision for you... a 40in HDTV shouldn't even be compared to a 24in LCD monitor. they're for different uses. 40in HDTV is for people who can sit farther away from their screens. a 24in monitor is for people who like to sit closer. that generally sums it up.
 
The poll isnt the deciding factor for me. Its just to see what others here thinks.

And its not about going to a smaller screen, its just about having all the resolutions playable. But, if I did go to a 24 inch screen, there is no way I would sell my Samsung. 🙂 It looks awesome in HD and Blu-ray.

I'm going to look around to see how and if my particular games run at a higher resolution than what i'm geting. If they do, then 1080p it is :thumbsup:
 
Ok, I understand that this screen is probably limited to 1920x1080. But why can I not run a resolution along the lines of 1680x1050 ? If it cannot be raised in res...can it be lowered ?

Google isn't my friend on this question.
