40 => 44 pin laptop HD connector

There is a pin missing amidst the 40 on one side. That is your alignment pin.

EDIT: Eww, no alignment block on the female. The extra four don't get connected, BTW. The hard drive should be bus powered.
 
Hi, I don't know about yours but mine goes with the adaptor's pcboard sticking up in relation to the drive. Luck, Jim

Edit: Also pin one is on the opposite end from the power connector. Connector usually has a molded arrow shape pointing to pin one. Drive usually has pin one identified.

Putting current where it shouldn't be is a bad idea!

Pin 1 should be marked somewhere to help you hopefully.
