The biggest and most politically charged change comes at the federal level with the imposition of a new fee for those adults without health insurance.

For 2014, the penalty is either $95 per adult or 1% of family income, whichever results in a larger fine.

man, seriously? this law is going to suck.

My P&N response is arguing about volume without context is parroting a talking point. Gee this bill has 2000000 words in it it must be bad. No single living human is capable of reading that much. Hell the TV guide has too many words so I stopped ordering that....

think how many people don't have health insurance. quite a lot i imagine.

when these people have any health problem, they usually go to the ER. this could be as simple as a toothache. happens. now the ER can't turn them away. rules.
but these people also don't have insurance. so the hospitals try and make these people pay. usually, they don't.

basically, these people cheat the system. yes, i'm aware not all people do this. i'm we're all aware that a lot of these people simply can't afford health insurance.
and yet this has to stop.

hopefully, this will lead the way to a reform in the US that will lead to cheaper health insurance as well. there is absolutely no justification for the absurd prices. but that doesn't change the fact that everybody needs insurance.

It is so stupid, because they can't even enforce the all the present legislature.

40,000 new ways for them to look at political opponents and crush them under laws they cannot possibly comprehend or adhere to.

This. At every level, HOA / local / city / state / federal / whatever, there are legislative bodies making new laws every day. It's gotten so bad that there is no conceivable way that people can know what all the laws are at any time and everyone is breaking numerous laws/ordinances/regulations unwittingly every day. The more laws, the more government control, so expect this process to get worse, not better.

It's for selective enforcement. Keep your head down and don't make waves, or your illegality will be used to end you.

It is a fact that there are so many laws nobody even knows how many there are. Moreover, everybody at some point will be in breach of these because it's utterly impossible for anybody, let alone the average Joe, to know what is and isn't legal.

BTW the federal ban on 40, 60, and 75 watt incandescent bulbs goes into effect Jan 1 so production will stop. 100W + were banned last year. Get em while you can if you prefer incandescent!

What a great society we have, empire that doesn't even provide basic health care to it's people.

And to obtain it, arm and a leg.

If it was up to me, get rid of Federal Government all together. Make each state a country and let them govern themselves.

Entire Justice system is an oxymoron.Way too many laws and no way to know what's legal from state to state and on federal level.

This entire country needs a BIG reset button.

So a fine of $190 a year, or $500 a month? lulz. How exactly is that incentive to hold insurance?

I dont see the outrage. Only 40,000 laws? If I had to guess there actually well more than 40,000.

There are over 18,000 incorporated villages/towns/cities.

There are over 3,000 counties.

Then 50 states, and the Fed. That is less than 2 laws for each of those bodies.

That is not at all true. What we really need is a system where that person who rushes to the ER can afford the bill for the 2 aspirin they were given instead of further entrenching a third party that does nothing but increase costs.

Right... because a magazine that you can just throw away is the same as a law that applies to everyone and probably in a bad way...

It goes up exponentially each year you're in violation, from what I understand. First year doesn't hurt much, you're right. After that comes the real pain.

But why do we even need more laws on the mountains of laws we have already? Seriously?

I hit up Home Depot last week and got about 30 60W and 30 40W along with recessed flood (24 of those). That should last me until LED is perfected and cheaper.

In the US there are roughly 20,000 cities and 3,000 counties. That is 23,000 local governments to add their ordinances to the 50 states and federal government. 40K laws seems like a ton until you consider how many separate legislative bodies there are to pass laws.
