For web and mobile app development.

Intend to run 1-2 Virtualbox or VMware guest VMs loaded with Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux for single developer environment. Each virtual machine is not expected to have heavy workload (unlike production server).

Is 4 weak Atom-based Braswell cores or 2 strong Ivy bridge/Haswell i5 cores better?

Braswell? Is that atom? Are you gonna use your braswell device like a tablet or run Linux on it? If not, STAY AWAY!!!! Get an ULV i5 or better yet, ARM processor if you want tablet. Both beats puny atom everytime, everyway.

No. Atom sucks.
That's basically the bottom line. I mean, I'm a patient fellow, but my N2830 Atom laptop, running Win10 64-bit, browsing these forums WITHOUT NoScript, bogs down so bad. It takes like a whole minute or longer for each page load, due to all of the ad-server scripts running. It's pathetic (and abusive, really).

My same desktop boxes, with G4560 CPUs, running the same Waterfox 51.0.1 64-bit browser on Win10 64-bit, load pages in a matter of mere seconds.

Atom for VM is pure madness. Dual core i5 with hyperthreading is over 2x faster than atom in multicore.

Another vote for the i5. Also, try to get 16 GB RAM since swapping to disk will hammer VM performance into the ground.

Atom sux, plain and simple. No amount of cores makes this better.

Yes, it's good for it's indented purpose (low power, cheap devices) but thats about it.
