4 Speaker output only in Media Player?

I have been using a SBLive! under XP since I got it. I went and got the latest drivers and mixer from soundblaster.com. The 4 speaker output only works when I play something in Windows Media player. Is this correct? Should it only play it in that. I seem to recall that Winamp, SoundForge, MusicMatch, etc, used to play out to 4 speakers under W2K. Is this a DirectX thing? I have it set to quad speakers in the sound properties dialog.
