I have a sound system on my motorcycle, and need to replace the speakers. Does magnet size make a difference as far as sound quality? What should I look for to make sure I get a quality speaker? I need something that can be played loud to compensate for engine and air noise.

Thanks
Dave

how much do you wanna spend? how much power is driving the speakers? and yes, size does matter :), of the magnets too. for a bike you may be looking at a specially sized speaker??? check out Crutchfield as a great source for speakers. They are handy because they provide all the speaker specs, tips etc. AND the physical dimensions right online.

Magnet size makes a bit of difference, but since the box in which the speaker will sit is probably crappy, it won't make much difference.
I suggest grabbing some of decently good quality, maybe around $40 or $50 or so.

Thanks for the replys....The orginal speakers had like a 20oz magnet and I replaced them with Jenson speakers with only a 2.5 oz magnet and when you turn up the volume the jensons sound like crap and break up. The speakers are 4" round and fit in a molded plastic case, with foam rubber behing them. I'm just looking for something that you can turn up the volume and not break up.

Thanks

The size of the magnet relates to power handling. With two speakers with the same kind of magnet, the one with the heavier magnet has higher power handling. Another indication of high power handling is voice coil size. One with a 2-inch voice coil can handle more power than a 1-inch voice coil. And since you are putting them in a motorcycle, get one with a rubber surround. Check this website. They have deals going on once in a while , like a Vifa/Scanspeak 4" speakers (4 ohms) for $20 each.
