Well, here you go to everyone that missed this when it was at Amazon. No PM'ing though snice the rebate says it has to be purchased at computers4sure. But $50 for this router is a Killer Deal.

You might want to take a look at their rebate link; it says router must
be purchased between May 11 and May 17, 2001. You might go ahead and
contact them about this, but I think they only have the rebate up because
it is still valid until June 17 (that is, if you bought it in May, you
have until June 17 to apply for the MIR)...

I clicked on the rebate link and this is what I got:

Offer valid only on product purchased from 06/11/2001 through 06/17/2001. 1-877-776-5780. Claims must be postmarked by 07/17/2001 to be eligible to receive the rebate. Limit of 2 Rebates per family, per address.

Looks like a great deal as long as you purchase by Father's Day.

Here's the link from the site.

Wait a minute... just how many different rebates are there for this router? The one i checked is valid for a purchase between 6/3 - 6/9 and postmarked by 7/9. This is the amazon deal, though, don't know if that's the reason why the dates are different.

The rebates are Vendor Specific. You cannot buy it at Amazon.com, and then send in another vendor's rebate. Computers4Sure seems to have the deal of the moment, since the Amazon.com deal is over, and a good buy.

I told my Brother about the Amazon.com deal, and he jumped on it. It was $10.00 cheaper with Coupon, but $49.00 for a 4 port router with a print server is an EXCELLENT deal.

OK, just to clear everything up. THis deal is good ONLY AT computers4sure.com or solutions4sure.com

The link to the Product Info is right here. - $99.00

The link to the Rebate is right here. - $50

The page linking up to the rebate does say it's only good from 5/11 - 5/17 but the rebate form itself says 6/11 - 6/17.

Hope that helps.

I would go ahead with this deal, but I hate rebate. NO more rebate for me after the OfficeMax PP $45 rebate, which never came.

I got this router about a week ago and it seems OK. I had issues at first but d/l'd the firmware update and it was much better. I still seem to get a little bit of a delay from clicking on my IE icon and it being able to find the server. but once it gets going, it's good to go from then on. Not sure why.

<< How does this compare against the Linksys BEFSR41? >>

[*]The SMC is faster -- Linksys has just published another firmware update to boost the speed of its unit but it is still betware [*]The SMC is more reliable -- check the reviews and user comments at Tim Higgins "Practically Networked" site[*]The SMC has a built-in print server port so that you can use a shared printer independently [*]The SMC also has an RS232 port that can be used with an external modem to provide backup to your cable service.

FYI - print server function

I'm not %100 sure, so check for exact details.....

The "print server" function is just a Parallel port you hook your printer to for LF-Mode printing...aka uni-directional. Many modern printers Will NOT work in this mode as the drivers require bi-directional connection.

SMC may have changed this, but I'm not sure.

Just a FYI to help save some headaches.. Buddy of mine bought one for his home....wouldn't work with his Epson Color Photo 1200? or his Color HP Laser jet (he ended up buying a jet-direct card instead)

It IS Uni-Directional. On most printers, this just means you can't do the "extras" like check the ink cartridge level and stuff like that. I have an HP 895 DeskJet which support Bi-Directional functinos but it still works fine with this router.

I just got mine this morning from Amazon.

The box says on one side "..contains...Two ethernet cables."

However there was only one cable included. So I called SMC and they're sending me out another.

This is a good router. I got mine a few months ago (paid $68 after rebate) and really like it. My Canon BJC-600e printer works great with the print server, but the printer is old and probably doesn't care about bi-directional communications. I haven't tried the serial port on the router. Note that you can use the serial port with ISDN if you have it.

I use static IP addresses with my internal network (not DHCP), and I'm pointing at my ISP's DNS servers instead of the router's IP address for name resolution. It performs DNS chores like it should, though. I have BellSouth DSL and the Barricade handles the PPPoE connection without problems (though you MAY have to update firmware). I've used port forwarding for FTP and HTTP and it worked as advertised. I can't get CheckPoint SecuRemote VPN to work through it, but the network admin at my workplace told me that he needs to update the firewall (and VPN) before it will work with NAT.
