4-port ethernet card as router - Anyone ever use one?

it would just be like when you put two nics in your machine and have it as a router. except this time you wouldn't need a switch...

Just curious - why not use a standalone router?

You can, I just figured this would be cheaper than most standalone routers, especially if you have a single box sitting around somewhere.

I use an old PC for my router/firewall.

Freesco 0.32 works great and allows way more tweaking and features than any stand alone router.

What about having a limited amount of ports since you can only have so many PCI card network adapters

Two bad I have two of those and they SUCK!!

Even with the new firmware, if you're doing much over 4GB/day total bw, they lock up and need to be power-cycled. It's a known issue with a counter that won't rollover or something. I had to talk to tier-2 one day and the engineer wasted 15 minutes of my time explaining that this was a problem, but unless I was doing illegal things, I wouldn't need more than 4GB a day. Try being a campus distro for linux and doing less than 4GB/day, jerk engineer guy!

Most retail routers only have 4 or 5.

I can have up to 10. My board supports 6 PCI slots. Plus printserver/ftpserver/dhcp server/dns server/http server, etc...

I can also use those multi port cards too.

I use an old PC as a router/firewall and because of today's switching technologies I won't run out of ports.
