4 pin to 4 pin adapter?

I have the same problem as the "How do I power new case fans?" thread in this forum. The adapter linked by mechBgon looks like what I need.

I see a female plug coming off the 4 pin plug going into a hard drive I added. It looks like the right size to fit the one mechBgon linked, except that it has four holes in it. My mother board has a four pin male plug on it that is the same size.

Can I find a 4 pin to 4 pin adapter to hook up to the cable powering the hd? Would that be a good idea?

I also see a 3-pin Y-Adapter at that website, but nothing to plug into a 4 pin male plug.

I am just looking to put a fan in the 3.5" bay or maybe one in a pci slot and they all look like they use the bigger 4 pin plugs.

(Sorry about the non-linked references: How is that done?)

See if there is anything here that suits your needs.

To hyper link a web page hit the blue http icon above , enter the url(www/http://) and then enter what you want to call the link.

Or you can type it out manually [*L=Like This]www.like-this.com[/L] which becomes => Like This

Thanks for the links. I think I found a few things that might work.

I have one male 3 pin plug on my board that is marked "fan."

I was going to buy this splitter and put one of these adapters on each end of the split cable.

Then I was going to plug this 3.5" bay fan on one end and this pci slot fan on the other.

I chose these ones because I will be buying from only two places, I can't find everything at one place.

Will I damage anything by trying to power these two fans with that one power supply?

Sorry, I thanked you both for the help, but forgot to thank Gazza for the help with linking. As usual, the answer was right there in front of me face 😀

Uh, bad bad bad. bad bad bad bad bad bad. Each motherboard header isn't meant to support more than one fan, so I have no idea why cooltek is selling such a dangerous product. You could easily burn out a mobo header using that. The fans that you have select uses 4 pin molex connectors to attach directly to your PSU lines. So you probably don't need to get anything else, but if you don't have enough male molex connectors from your PSU and those fans don't come with a passthrough, you would need the Y-Splitter I have posted before.

BTW, bay coolers are inefficent and noisy. You are better off just adding regular case fans. Only get bay coolers if the case is already full of case fans and you are having stablity problems.

Thanks OulOat.

I don't have any 4 pin molex connectors left. How does that Y-Splitter you posted hook up?

I added a second hard drive and used the last connecter to power that. Do I just pull the connecter out of the second HD and then plug the splitter into the end that used to go into the HD? Will I then power the HD and the new fan with the ends of the splitter?

Yes, that is how you do it. But from the looks of those bay coolers, they look like they have both male and female ends to them. So you could hook the bay cooler to the PSU then hook your HD to the bay cooler. But I must stress again that under normal circumstances bay coolers are not necessary or good. Only get them as your last resort.

I don't have any equipment to cut out my case for an extra case fan. I live in an apartment that gets pretty hot in the summer. Are bay coolers going to help at all?

Your case doesn't have holes for fans? Cases usually come with at least one or two locations for holes. Probably a stamped grill, the way you tell is the 4 screw holes.

Yep its there. I never noticed the screw holes around and just thought they were ventilation holes. Thanks very much for all of your help, I really appreciate it.
