I have a ~5 year old power supply, which has a 4 pin power output that plugged into my old motherboard.

I'm in the process of building a new pc, and it seems all the new motherboards have an 8 pin connector instead of a 4 pin. Can i use the 4 pin? Or do I need to upgrade my power supply?

Here is a link to the psu that I have:

Thanks for the help.

Yes, it's possible to use the 4-pin connector. I've used only the 4-pin connector on an 8-pin motherboard with i7-920 @ 3.36GHz, fully stable.

What kind of system are you planning to pair the PSU with? How old is it?

Ok, that's great news.

My new system is:

Intel i5 2500k
ASUS P8Z68-V
ATI 6950 2gig
Corsair Vengeance Ram 2x4GB @ 1600
120gb Corsair SSD
250gb hdd

I think I'll have enough juice... hopefully I'm using <400w under full load with the above parts.

From an electrical standpoint it's no problem. Get the adapter on Ebay. Even "works" without the adapter, although then of course you miss the point of the better distribution through more contacts.

Don't overload it. Will you overclock that SB?

I may do some minimal overclocking on the i5, just because it's so easy. Good call, it couldn't hurt to get the adapter. I'll do that.

Additionally, I have an adapter that converts 2 4pin molex to a 6 pin pci-e, since my psu only have 1 6pin pci, and my 6950 requires 2. I ran the 2 4pin molexs from separate rails, just to make sure I strain one too much.

It should handle the SB even overclocked. Consider that my i7-920 @3.2 (3.36 turbo) consumes around 150W at load, about the same as 2500K@4.5.

Some don't like using adapters for PCIe though... It wouldn't hurt to grab a new PSU to make sure your expensive new PC is safe. E.g. Neo Eco 620C for $50AR.
