4 pin fan to 3 pin mobo

This is probably a stupid question but I couldn't find the answer after an hour of looking. I've just bought an XP-90RT and a ASUS A8N-VM mobo. The 90RT fan has a 4pin connector but the mobo only has 4 pins.

Is it ok to use it like this and if so, which 3 pins do I use?

There's only 2 possibilities, try them both. I think your fan is going to run full speed all the time though.

from what i recall, the xp90 retail package comes with a 3 pin fan as well. But if yours came with just the standard 4 pin molex, then just hook it up the power supply.

Hmm, i'm in the UK and it came with one of those small 4 pin fan connectors rather than a large molex.

i think you can go from 4 to 3 and 3 to 4, but the fan will always run at 12v.

The 4-pin should have a 1xred wire, 2xblack, and 1xyellow.

In your MoBo manual, it should tell you which pin in ground, which is rpm, and which is the +12V. Usually there is a Black (ground), red (voltage), and yellow (rpm) - in that order.

You need to connect the +12V on the molex (yellow) to the +12V on the Mobo (Red). Black goes to black.

Anyway, that's how I did it (i think so anyway). Just check your MoBo manual. Otherwise, you can always just attack it straight to your PSU.

When you say"small 4 pin", do you mean it's the same as the 3 pin fan connector plus one more pin. If that is the case, just switch the three appropriate wires to a three pin shell.
It's very easy to do. On the back will be several little silver rectangles, those are the locking tabs. Using a thin tool, press them down one at a time and pull the wires out. Then reinsert in a three pin shell in the proper sequence.

On most fans black is ground, red goes to the 12V line and yellow/blue is the sensor wire.

On the large 4 pin Molex, the center blacks are ground, the red is 5V and the yellow is 12V.

Yep, similar to the 3 pin fan connector but it actually has 4 wires. I think its a new Intel type, even though the XP-90 is supposed to be ok with AMD boards. It works ok just plugging it in to the 3 pin header, just cant alter the fan speed
