4 machine setup.. cant ping

heres my setup.. ive got a dsl modem and a nic, bridged with xp pro, connected to a hub .. on that hub i also have 4 other machines (xp, linux, 98, wfw3.11).. my isp only gives me two dynamic ips... this machine and the one with the modem are set for dhcp and get their ip from my isp .. the other two are set with static ips .. having them online is a bonus, but i could do with just being able to send files between them.. however i cant ping them from eachother.. the hub lights up properly and all, but the pings dont get there.. anyone have any ideas about this?

if you need any more info just ask ..
 
Perhaps you could try setting up the modem to use ICS instead of bridging, and set all the other computers to use dhcp off the one with the modem. Then you would need to set all the other ones to use the one with ICS and the modem to use that as the default gateway. Dunno if this will help or not, but it's what I do (except i have a dialup modem)
 
Well, this WOULD work, but its not a solution I want to use.. Doing this, I'd have 5 machines on one IP .. I'd have to be opening ports left and right to do anything, and would basically have 4 crippled machines and one insecure one ..

I'd rather have two machines online with more intact firewalls, and the other three just being accessable.. the only problem is I can't ping them, and I have no idea why.. the physical connection is there, and theyre both configured right (192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3) but they cant ping eachother.. ;/
 
So your setup is like this;
dslmodem-->hub-->4 systems?
If so then you can only have two systems connected to the hub and they would be set to dynamic IP's. From there your best bet would be to get either two additional nics (one for each of the systems connected to the net) and connect the remaning two using ICS. Or get one more nic and another hub and setup ICS through only one machine and connect that to the other hub with the remaning two systems on it. You might be able to buy a router but I'm not sure how they work with two IP's.
Sorry but I don't see any other solution for what you want to do.
 
its not that i want to get all 5 systems online at the same time.. i just need one of these 4 online, and the other 3 to be accessable over the lan in this room..

unfortunately the moment i renew to get an ip from my isp, this machine is no longer 192.168.0.1 and is off the lan .. i've got the alternate configuration tab on the tcp/ip properties for this machine set to 192.168.0.1, but its one or the other, not both .. i need some way to have this machine BOTH 192.168.0.1 and whatever my isp gives me, without using a second nic (first i dont have a spare nic and im already short on cabling..) ..

im also having a problem with the win98 machine .. no matter what i do it wont get on the network.. workgroup is set properly, ips set properly, nic and cable are both verified working, hub lights up, but the damned thing just wont ping anything or reply to any pings ;/
 
Unfortunately because your isp gives you dynamic IP's you can't just add another IP to your IP address in your local area connection-->tcp/ip properties-->advnaced-->IP settings. Now if you could get static ones from your isp then you would be set. Why don't you want to add another network card?
 
because im broke from buying cabling and nics to hook up 4 other machine and thus cant afford another $30 for a nic and cabling 😛

there has to be some way to be on both my lan and online at the same time without an extra nic .. the physical connection is there.. geez

do you have any idea why i cant ping the win98 box? its been a while since ive done any networking with 98 but it looks like its all set up properly and SHOULD work..
 
sigh. oh well. now instead of being one cable short of a full network, i need a bigger hub, an extra nic and 2 cables..

Do you have netbui installed for all the systems that want to communicate with the win98 box including win98?
 
Check TomBilliodeaux thread re: XP and networking...the same lan setup and the same problems.

The fix for his setup was:
Install NetBios over IPX/SPX on all the machines (NICS) on the LAN.
Disable NetBios over TCP/IP on all NICs.

Configure TCP/IP on only those devices that need Internet Connectivity.

Now: FileSharing will run over IPX, which won't be routed to the internet. Note: PING is TCP/IP only, so it still won't work across the lan. Use net view \\computername to see the other computers.
