Just bought this, guess I'll get it in a day or two since they are only around 50 miles from me. However, I'm in California so I pay 8.25% tax that brings this to $6.48.

It evidently uses 2 AA batteries (not included).

Link (to crap!)

They are as equivalent to maglites as stevie wonder is to far-sightedness. I think most people would be pretty disappointed in the lack of range and luminance with these.

For that price, I have to agree with you jjsole. But a good LED flashlight will beat a standard maglight anyday.

Normal LED flashlights are not good for distance. Don't get it unless you want to only read books at night with that LED flashlight and maybe light the path in your house. This might be comparable to a solitaire 1AAA maglite. I haven't tried it before, but this is a sorta educated guess.

Luxeon LEDs are much much better than normal LEDs, but still not as good as incandescent bulbs. There are also Xenon bulbs... To learn more about the other alternatives out there, check out: http://flashlightreviews.com/index1.html Maybe you'll find something more useful.

Better lights cost more money, so beware. There are some flashlights out there that produce more light than the 3D maglite but are the size of a 2AA maglite. :) Costs a lot more too, but you do get what you pay for.

Oh, well this might be a gyp. I've seen LED flashlights in the stores and the prices have always been pretty high, higher than maglites or similar. I've never seen an LED flashlight in action, held one in my hand, etc. I have some AA maglites, so I might be disappointed. The link makes it seem like it's super bright, but maybe it's just hype. When I get it, I'll post my thoughts, comparing it to my maglites which I paid around $10 each for. The laser pointers are interesting. I have two of the combo pen/LED/laser pointers from them, cool stuff. The batteries were a bit corroded. I guess they were stressed merchandise. But after hitting the button batteries with a few passes of fine sandpaper, the worked fine.

Just a comment.... I almost bought one...decided to save a few $$ instead

My friend had the exact same pen as this, and it really does shock you! It doesn't say batteries because it's a wierd type of integrated internal battery, but it's included. But I'm serious, these pens do shock you fairly well. He also had a lighter that did the same thing.

LEDs offer several advantages over incandecent lights..

1) White beam. As the batteries die, the beam stays white, but just gets dimmer. This makes an LED light with 1/2 dead batteries still usable. An incandecent light will get this sickly pale yellow color that soon fades into orange. YUCK!

2) Sucks batteries dry. Many of the better lights use boost converters in them. This means that they supply a relatively constant current to the LEDs. When the light goes out, the battery is truly sucked dry of every last bit of power. You get more for your money.

3) Reliable. Incandecent can easily burn out and leave you in the dark. Some incandecents also tend to "age." Carefully examine the bulb of an AA Maglight that has been used for a while. The bulb will liekly have a nice black tint to it. MagLights are always bright when they are brand new, but the bulbs tend to put out less light over time.

4) Support inovation. Mag is the Microsoft of the flashlight world. They DO NOT have an LED light out. Their last new comsumer product was the solitaire -- already well over a decade old. But if you make a light that looks too much like one of theirs, you will get sued. I suspect that they fired their entire engineering staff so they could afford to hire more lawyers.

The downside of LEDs is that they are more expensive than an equivalent incan, and they tend not to throw light as far. They are less suited to seeing 1/4 mile away. Also, I would not expect much out of a $5.00 light. To get that price, you have to cut corners. So if the $5.00 model sucks, do not generalize and say that LEDs suck.

I am a bit of a flashlight collector. I have one of THESE on my belt right now...

I was looking at this 4 led $6 light, but I bought this 9 led 3AA light instead for $8.01

I haven't received it yet.

By the way, I bought this primarily as an emergency light for when the power is out. I figure it should run for a long time on 3 AA batteries, and I don't mind keeping some spare AAs around. Hopefully it will also be good for walking at night.

Now THAT is what I call a flashlight! IF you have the money, you can't beat one of their lights! They are the Porche and BMW of flashlights combined!

Now, if only I could afford one... :(

I'm considering the L7 LumaMax.

The only drawback is the ni-cad battery. I don't like the idea of buying a bunch of disposable lithium batteries for all their other models, but ni-cad isn't much better.

The owners of Maglite divorced real nasty and the company seems to be just continuing like a chicken minus the head.

I have used a LED flashlight since HP sent them out as promo items 20 years ago. Not real bright, but dandy for not disturbing others. These new ones are actually way too bright for my tastes. I use a freebie from Kmart the most, with a signle AG10 cell, perfect for movies, or finding where the key goes.
