but i feel sorry for the kids, what were they doing by themselves at night anyway tho?
We had a similar situation in the town I used to live in, though it wasn't a hit and run. Kids always crossing at numerous places along a 300 yard stretch of a busy road instead of using the cross-walk at the nearest intersection, often wandering down the middle of the road in the turning lane while they waited for one direction of traffic to clear, riding their bikes in the road, etc. I would routinely see a small group of kids who looked no older than 6~8 y.o. crossing the street or in the freaking road with no supervision by older siblings or parents.
It was in an area where there were a few large apartment complexes and a trailer park, so you can imagine many single mothers leaving their children home while they are working. But I also personally knew of many cases where the parent was getting high or partying, or just didn't want to deal with their kids, so they sent them outside and didn't really care where they were or what they were doing.
One day a truck hit a few young kids who were in the road, killing two and seriously injuring the third. The two killed were siblings, 5 and 6 years old. The injured child was the oldest at 12 years old. The driver wasn't faulted in the accident.
Of course, the mother of the two siblings was on the local news emotionally condemning the police for not prosecuting the driver, perfectly oblivious to her own culpability by letting her 5 and 6 year-old babies roam the country-side without adequate supervision.
